Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Hernandez.
Ashley, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Well, I started off being in a few local bands in Houston but always loving art. I had done poster designs and merch designs for a while and only started to pursue art professionally when I moved to west Texas with my husband and started at UTPB. I’m close to graduating with my BFA and teacher certification but we have plans on creating a studio on our property down in Terlingua Texas by Big Bend National Park.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t haha I started my twenties basically thinking I didn’t need school and just being really hard on myself because of the relationships I had in my life at that time. I eventually knew something needed to change so I dumped the people that were hurting me, sobered up, and began occupying my time with art. I met my husband, Joseph, who encouraged me to go back to school and pursue my art degree. He believes in me every day and is my biggest cheerleader haha.
We’d love to hear more about your art.
So my company is my art work. I’m currently doing commissions while I work on stuff for my senior show this fall. My specialties are printmaking, painting, photography, and hand-built pottery. I’m multidisciplinary, so, I can do a little bit of everything since my schooling puts us in all types of creative spaces. I’m pretty proud of my photo series since I had 10 different models, with various locations and hair, makeup and clothes were all done by me. I invested a lot of time and I’m grateful for the friends I made here that invested their time as well. I think something that sets me apart is I have an eye for color and I come with a romantic disposition on each person I am drawing or photographing. I see them and all the beautiful things that make them an individual and I like to celebrate that in my art.
What were you like growing up?
When I was a toddler, I would beg my mom to ask for paper bags at the grocery store just so I had something to paint on. Growing up as a teen I was very sensitive to others and always would write love songs in my room when my heart was broken. As a young adult I was always out keeping the streets hot and sowing my wild oats. Throughout all of that I’ve always loved music and music is something I will never get tired of, just like art.
