Today we’d like to introduce you to Beau Crump.
Hi Beau, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in a small town with little to offer for stimulation to draw or paint. My journey to becoming an artist began in 1975. My wife and I flew to New Orleans for a weekend trip. While on the trip, I saw for the first time an art museum. There began my fascination with lights and shadows and color. It was something I felt compelled to do.
After sharing my experience with a friend she offered to give me starter lessons. This began a lifetime pursuit of painting excellence. We made numerous visits to art museums around Europe. I studied the art of the masters to learn techniques and ways to achieve a higher level of mastery.
From time to time when I became stumped, I would then get tips from experienced artists.
All of this time my art was for my family or myself. Since I was mostly self taught, I never showed it publicly until 8 years ago. I referred to myself as a hobbyist at that time and called myself “the closet painter”. Little did I know my art would be appreciated by others. I began showing at the Conroe Art League.. Here I came to know several high achieving artists who gave lessons and helped me to grow further. I have received many ribbons and awards for my art in recent years.
Collectors have found and purchased my works. I can now refer to myself as an artist.
Landscapes have been my main stay but in recent years my portraits have gained much attention.
I paint because I enjoy it. It is my hope that everyone will enjoy my work and appreciate it. My art is realistic in style and composition though I sometimes enjoy painting impressionistic..
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
My struggles with trying to achieve good art have been to the point of total frustration. At times, when I was painting and couldn’t achieve what I was looking for, I would put down my easel and oils and put them away in a closet. Satisfaction was not gained until an experienced artist came along and gave me the answer to my problem. Often it was several years later before i found the right person to answer those questions.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in doing oil paintings.
My work is with real landscapes, cityscapes, objects, and portraits.
I look for dramatic shadows and color in my potential subjects. However, it is often the subtle values that set the mood and atmosphere.
I am mostly proud of my recent landscapes that require a month or six weeks to paint.
What sets me apart from others is my patience in achieving a detailed work.
How do you define success?
Success is measured by our ability to love others and our God.
