Today we’d like to introduce you to Bianca Smothers.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
So, as a young me, I’ve always loved music and fashion. I was the youngest sister helping my older sisters with their hair and makeup. I felt as if I was the one that they would ask advice for on their outfits etc. But when I wasn’t helping others, I was helping myself with music. Now I taught myself beauty and fashion just because I was so in love with the models and their clothes. So I studied them by buying magazines that we couldn’t afford because I begged my mom to get them for me. I would rip out pages from vogue and put them all over my wall to keep me inspired. I was raised by a single mom so I didn’t have much or much family around besides my sisters and we always kept to ourselves. That being said all I really had growing up was music. Music kept me sane, when someone was getting into it at the house, music blocked it out. When I was so angry with my life and how “not normal” it was, music was my escape. So my world as an adult is music and hairstyling. It’s exactly where I belong and fit in without the judgment. Music is still keeping me sane, and fashion is still involved in my everyday life.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Oh no, smooth? Pfff I absolutely wish life was smooth. But believe it or not all the greats have had their downs to get to their ups. And well my childhood in general was rough, but it’s made me the music loving fashionista that I am today, those were my escapes. I wasn’t loud or confident like other performers, so I didn’t even sing much in front of anyone til I was about 18. That was the toughest for me. I always wish I started singing proud sooner, but not everyone blossoms at the same rate.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I work in a salon in Rice village called Beautique day spa and salon. I am a hairstylist there and I absolutely love doing all types of hair. I specifically love blondes and shirt cuts like men or pixies, either or. Music wise, I am genre-less, I’ve decided I don’t have to choose a genre because I appreciate so much music I like writing all styles. But I absolutely enjoy creating art in every aspect that I am able and so I do.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Big shoutout to mom and dad! My biggest cheerleaders and also my sisters 😭 Yal are so so supportive and Yal are NOT ASHAMED AT ALL! I absolutely love hearing you scream in the crowd or having yal come into the salon and just spend time with me in the workplace 🥰 I love you all. Also a mentor, believe it or not is my BESTFRIEND. Her name is Marisa Garcia who sings for a band called Th3rd coast roots. If it wasn’t for this free spirit I don’t think I ever would’ve believed in myself like I do today. And I’m still working on believing in myself like she does in her passion. Thank you for being in my life.
