Meet Ben Fairchild of Fairchild Sports Performance in Spring Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ben Fairchild.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am from New Orleans, La area and was studying and working there for Mackie Shilstone (performance manager to Serena Williams, Peyton Manning, Roy Jones, Jr and many others) until 2005, when Hurricane Katrina struck. After losing my home and work place, I moved to Houston upon the recommendation of my mentor, Shilstone. I landed at the Houstonian Club, where I began an NFL Draft Preparation Program – preparing college football players for the NFL combine.

Over the next 10 years, I was able to work with a number of great NFL players and players from the other major professional sports. Because of the injury-preventive approach that I took to assessing and training these athletes, word spread to the oft-injured pro baseball population and my break came in 2010 when Lance Berkman was contemplating retirement. He was out of shape and injured and desperate for rejuvenation. When Lance hired me, we were able to turn his physical state, and his career, around. He lost 20 pounds, got out of knee pain, and the rest was history. By the 2011 All-Star break, he led Major League Baseball in home runs, and went on to win his first world series with the St. Louis Cardinals while picking up the honor of 2011 MLB Comeback Player of the Year.

Graciously, Lance credited me with his career resurrection and then phone calls started coming. A year later, I opened Fairchild Sports Performance, a 12,000 square foot boutique-style training center that has since been home to nearly 100 professional baseball players in the offseason.

We now have what we consider the best team of strength and performance specialists in the country, and we serve everyone from an NFL General Manger to an NBA Point Guard to an NFL running back to the MLB’s MVP.

We also serve the general population seeking fat loss and basic fitness. We treat these training scenarios with the same respect that we would a professional athletes.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I love a quote by Biz Stone, founder of Twitter, that rings so true for FSP: “Timing, perseverance, and ten years of trying will eventually make you look like an overnight success.”

“It has not always been easy” is a massive understatement. It has at times felt impossible, particularly early in our development. But I chose to never see it that way. I was very gracious that I had lots of assistance from really good, passionate people. God never failed to open the next door.
