Today we’d like to introduce you to Berline Damier.
Hi Berline, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am a first generation Haitian-American, raised by a single mother alongside my brother and sister. From an early age, I was always considered gifted. But more than that, I was aware that I saw the world differently. Creativity wasn’t something I learned, it was something I naturally lived in.
As a child, I gravitated toward anything that gave me the freedom to create. School projects weren’t just assignments to me; they were opportunities to push beyond the limits and to reimagine what was possible. Whether it was writing songs, dressing up as a character (fiction/non-fiction), bringing stories to life through acting and theatrical expression, or building detailed models and historical replicas, I was always fully immersed in the process of creating.
I found joy in designing, in storytelling, in turning ideas into experiences. Even then, I understood that I didn’t quite fit the traditional mold. The expected path never fully resonated with me, because I was wired to explore, to express, and to build in ways that felt different. Art became the place where everything made sense. It felt like home.
Spoken word poetry first entered my life as a simple art form, it was something I admired from a distance. That changed one day when I found myself on my bedroom floor, in tears, and my story unintentionally written out as a poem. In that moment, I realized the power of words to heal, to reveal, and to build. From then on, I embraced spoken word not just as art, but as a ministry, a way to help others grow in a life of love.
With a background in creative directing, I approach each piece as more than something to be heard, I see it as something to be experienced. I often bring my poetry to life through dramatization, blending storytelling, performance, and visual expression to create moments that resonate deeper and linger longer.
The name B.lovD (Be Loved) was born from my mission to share the love of God. I believe we were created by Love, for Love, to love, and everything I create is rooted in that Truth. My work is an invitation: to be loved by God, to be loved by self, and to be loved by others.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of my greatest struggles has been navigating how my work is received. I’ve wrestled with questions like: Will people truly understand my vision? Will they accept it? Will they see my heart and my intentions the way I mean them?
Because for me, this has never been about the stage, it’s about impact. It’s about helping people, reaching people, and creating something that speaks beyond performance.
At the same time, being an artist means being deeply connected to what I create. I am sensitive about my art because it carries pieces of me, my story, my beliefs, and my purpose. And once it’s shared, it no longer belongs only to me. It’s open to interpretation, to acceptance, and to criticism.
Learning to release my work with confidence, while letting go of how it’s perceived, has been a continual process. But it’s also strengthened me, reminding me that my responsibility is to create from a place of truth, and trust that it will reach who it’s meant to reach.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a spoken word artist and creative director, and my work lives at the crossroads of voice and vision. Through poetry, I give language to emotion, things often felt but not easily expressed. Through creative direction, I shape those emotions into tangible experiences through visuals, design, and storytelling.
I create work where words are not just heard, but seen, and where visuals don’t just exist, but speak.
Along this journey, I’ve led writing workshops, helping individuals find their voice and translate their stories into something powerful and honest.
I’ve also shared the stage with impactful poets such as Ezekiel Azonwu, Joseph Solomon, and Preston Perry. Beyond the stage, my work extends into creating environments that reflect the same heart behind my words. I’ve collaborated with churches and nonprofit organizations to design beautiful, whimsical spaces for charity events, reassuring dignity, and a sense of being seen and valued.
An important fact about me is I have intention behind everything I create. My heart is deeply embedded in my work, I don’t hide behind the idea of “calling” as an excuse to be passive or undefined. I believe in showing up fully, in giving my best, and in stewarding every opportunity with excellence.
For me, it’s not just about expression, it’s about responsibility. If I’m trusted with a story, a stage, or a space, I’m going to honor it with care, depth, and intention. That combination of heart and discipline is what shapes my work and sets it apart.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I have a spoken word piece out on Youtube, B.lovD – Black Sunflower, it’s a love letter to black women.
I recently started a wedding poetry business, The Wedding Wordsmith.
As The Wedding Wordsmith, I provide wedding poetry services for couples looking to add a meaningful spoken element to their ceremony. My services include original poems written and performed for your wedding, pre-written poems by me, selected to honor the moment, and custom vow writing in a poetic style.
