Today we’d like to introduce you to Beth Johnson.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I have always loved art and creating things for as long as I can remember, but it was my senior year in high school when I really decided that art was something I wanted to pursue as a career. I’ve had many ups and downs on the path to getting where I want to be, and some days the road has been difficult, but I’m happy to say that I’m finally in a place where art can be at the forefront of my life.
Please tell us about your art.
I really love creating fantasy art and illustrations, and I love to paint and draw things with wings, tails, feathers and scales. I also love experimenting with creating abstract paintings and scenes of space as well. My media of choice include watercolors, ink, graphite, and occasionally acrylics. I’ve always had this fascination with all things fantastical ever since I was little and love the idea of magical realms with bizarre creatures and having grand adventures. I’ve always used art as a means of escape, and it has really become like a source of therapy to me. I hope that when others view my work, that it takes them out of their problems and worries for just a little bit and transports them to a place where they can be free, if only just for a little bit.
What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
I think it’s definitely harder for artists to thrive now, especially in a digital age where it’s easy to download what you want. But more so I think people don’t necessarily view art as something that’s a work of love, or a reflection of the inner workings of the person that created it. They don’t see all the blood, sweat, tears, and time it goes into creating each piece. So, I think it’s hard to stand out sometimes, especially when it’s that kind of attitude that we artists frequently battle. So, continue to hold events that highlight
creators- make them the main focus and encourage them to keep striving for their goals. You can also help local artists thrive
by buying their work- every bit helps us to
be able to keep doing what we love, and even if folks can’t afford the work, support in the form of copious amounts of caffeine is always much appreciated as well!
