Today we’d like to introduce you to Beth Liebling.
Beth, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my professional career as a lawyer specializing in family law because I wanted to make things easier for families. I tried to help families and children navigate difficult situations by recognizing that there was so much more than legal stuff to deal with. I realized early on that the key to resolution of the case was addressing the relationship issues. The legal aspects were often more straightforward than the deeply hidden interpersonal conflicts, but it was always the latter that interested and motivated me. Over the years, I have counseled hundreds of people facing a multitude of relationship issues with or without accompanying legal disputes.
Despite the fact that my training and career relied so heavily on logical analysis alone, I have always been a dreamer and hopeless romantic. I love Disney World because it is chock full of happiness, families, laughter and excitement. In many ways, Darling Way is a romantic version of the happies place on earth. We try to provide a grown up escape from the stresses of life and inspire appreciation for love and romance no matter what. A little joy and romance never hurt anyone!
I simply refuse to believe that there is such a thing as too much happiness or love, nor is there ever too little to share. Selfishly, the more joy I bring others, the happier my life is. Astonishingly, this cute little romantic shop has been so well received that I now get to speak with an even larger audience about all things romantic on our weekly, hour long radio talk show, “Love and Laughter with Beth”(ESPN Houston 97.5Fm, at 10p on Saturday nights). It’s a dream come true to be sharing stories of the heart with so many incredible people, and again, my life is blessed because of each and every connection I make.
Has it been a smooth road?
Starting a new business is never a smooth road. Creating a business that relies upon people talking openly and respectfully about subjects that have previously been absolutely taboo feels like climbing Mt. Everest in the dark while carrying luggage packed by people who hate you. The best part is that I have met so many other people who are also making the arduous climb, or who are just happy to help me on my way because they appreciate my mission.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Darling Way – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
The Darling Way mission is to encourage passionate connections in everyone’s relationship. We believe that everyone benefits from a little bit more love, romance and intimacy in their life. Love starts with self and works its way outward, so no matter anyone’s relationship status they should indulge their own romantic soul in ways that speak to them. One person might enjoy dressing in ways that feel good with fabrics and styles that flatter; another person might indulge by luxuriating in a warm bubble bath. Couples can create innumerable romantic shows together that will help cement the intimacy between them. At Darling Way, we have something for everyone. We offer a unique assortment of beautiful things that we find romantic, from lingerie, candles, lotions/potions to fun, flirty and frisky props for play. We take pride in our commitment to our clients and community. We advocate for long term relationships and seek that with each of our guests. It is our honor to advise and assist people with their questions, concerns and celebrations. We host bridal showers, bachelorette or divorce parties, networking events, educational workshops. What sets us apart from any other retail business, is that we are really a community resource disguised as a boutique. Our mission to spread confidence, love and romance is more important than our balance sheet, and our clients know they will always be the most important part of Darling Way; they are always what matters regardless of the size of their wallet. The wonderful things we sell are only worthwhile if they are meaningful to our guests; the way we support people is always invaluable. Because we believe that a happy love life means a happy “real” life, there is nothing we won’t talk about. When it comes down to basics, everything is personal and here at Darling Way, nothing is ever impersonal.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The greatest thing about Houston is the incredible warmth and openness of its citizens. It’s rare for us to have a day at the shop without meeting someone who has outrageous stories to share with us about having lived somewhere off the beaten path, a job in some unusual profession requiring calm in the midst of catastrophe, or an interesting family history with twists and turns enough for a long novel. We love hearing the stories, trials and tribulations of our new friends; the fact that they trust us enough to let us into their personal lives is an honor that we hold dear.
The downside to such a great, large city is that some of our friends live too far away to stop by on the spur of the moment as often as they would like. Darling Way is fairly centrally located and we love that traffic is not a problem near us even during the holiday season, but for our friends in the suburbs, it’s still a bit of a drive to visit. (But we are so glad when they do!)
