Hi Betty, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hello, my name is Betty Balshaw. I was born and raised in Monterrey, Mexico, and moved to Houston in 2008. My background is in International Marketing, with the majority of my work experience being in the administrative legal sector. Working with law firms can get pretty monotonous after a while. After years of working in the legal field, I felt a strong desire to break free from the routine and explore my entrepreneurial side. The idea of starting a business with my friend sparked a newfound excitement within me. I saw it as an opportunity to challenge myself, learn new skills, and ultimately create something of my own. Despite the uncertainty that comes with starting a new venture, I was determined to take the leap and see where this new path would lead me.
A friend of mine suggested we start a company doing remodeling and painting for properties in Houston. I liked the idea of trying something new, and with my background in Marketing, I knew I could sell just about anything I needed also the guidance from my parents who believed in me and provided the capital and motivation to pursue a different career path. That’s how A To B Contractors was born in 2010. As I navigated the challenges of starting my own contracting business, I quickly learned the importance of building strong relationships with clients and delivering high-quality work. With each project, I gained valuable experience and honed my skills in project management and customer service. Despite the setbacks and obstacles along the way, I remained determined to succeed and grow my business.
After a few years of doing maintenance and painting, I had built up a crew to help me expand my business. Unfortunately, my business partner had to step back due to personal reasons, leaving me to run the company on my own. I took a break and worked for a construction company, which gave me new ideas and tools to strengthen my business.
Being a woman in the construction industry was challenging, and I often lost sleep wondering if I was making the right decisions. When my husband came into my life, we decided to pivot once again. After becoming licensed as a fence constructor, we started building fences.
Our community and surrounding areas began to trust us for our excellent customer service and attention to detail. As we worked on building fences, we realized there was a demand for other home improvement services in our community. With our strong work ethic and dedication to quality, we decided to expand our offerings to meet the needs of our customers. This decision allowed us to grow our business and establish a reputation for reliability and professionalism. It took us a few years to establish ourselves in the new market and explore new opportunities. Over time, we have expanded our services to include painting, fencing, landscaping, make-readys, and much more. We are always seeking ways to improve our company through ongoing education and training.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Being a woman in the construction industry has been a challenging journey. The effects of Covid have also impacted many businesses. Despite facing obstacles, I believe they ultimately contribute to our strength.
