Meet Bibi Khan of An-Nisa Hope Center in Southwest Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bibi Khan.

Bibi, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
An-Nisa Hope Center was formed in 2009 when two women decided they needed to give a voice to the woman who didn’t have one. Our goal was to give women that were leaving domestic violence situations a safe place to live while getting back on their feet. An-Nisa started out as a shelter, however, the organization quickly transformed into a multi-service organization that now works to empower, educate, and enrich our community – one family at a time. Our mission is to provide services and resources to bring individuals and families to self-sufficiency. Our current services include case management, counseling, education, and short-term financial assistance to families that are seeking a self-sufficient life.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely has not. Not even months after opening, we were quickly met with opposition and allegations that we were setting out to break up families. It was not an easy road for us after we opened, especially since we were one of the first organizations in our community that was solely helping women in domestic violence situations. People did not understand that domestic violence was such a large issue in our communities.

Please tell us about the organization.
Summed up we are working to transform lives in our community. We are working to provide services and resources to bring individuals and families to self-sufficiency. While our vision remains to eliminate crisis within family units, including domestic violence. The services we are currently providing are case management, short-term financial assistance, counseling/therapy, educational programs, mentorship programs, and community engagement events. Our diverse team of professional volunteers allows us to give our community many different programs and services. Our proudest achievement is definitely that An-Nisa operates without payroll, so 100% of all funds go directly toward helping our community as best as we can. Our core values are confidentiality, care, and commitment – so our clients are not just our clients, they are treated like family – and that’s what we feel sets us apart from others.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We are definitely planning to expand our services to be able to assist more families that are in crisis situations. We are hoping for more educational programs in our community to raise awareness on issues like domestic violence, mental health, and family issues. We would like to give back to our community on a larger scale, for sure. Every day is a surprise – we love every moment of it!
