Today we’d like to introduce you to Biff Picone and Nadine Joli-Coeur.
Natural Pawz is owned by husband-and-wife team Biff Picone and Nadine Joli-Coeur and was founded in 2005 with a simple mission: to positively impact the lives of pets and owners through all-natural, holistic food. With 21 locations throughout the Greater Houston area, they’re committed to offering world-class products by personally researching and testing every item.
Biff, Nadine – please share more about your story with us.
We’re also passionate about our community. Together with local pet rescues, the city, and customer support, we’ve helped feed countless of foster pets and meals-on-wheels programs in local Houston neighborhoods.
Due to our passion and great employees we have been able to grow to 17 locations in the Houston Area in our first 11 years and still finding customers asking for a Natural Pawz in their neighborhood.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It is always a challenge when you have a growing business, especially when you are self-funded. We have been fortunate to land locations in the neighborhoods with great pet parents. As retailers, finding passionate employees can be challenging, but we have been able to find great people who care about pets and work hard to learn nutrition and become great resources for pet parents in the Houston area. We are proud of the people who work at Natural Pawz.
Please tell us a little more about Natural Pawz.
We established Natural Pawz as a resource for pet parents who want the best in food, treats, toys and supplies. We are known for testing all products and visiting all the manufacturing plants before we will carry a food.
We are proud of the fact that without outside investment money we have been able to provide locations all over the Houston area so there is a locally owned family business nearby.
Our employees are a huge difference because they are passionate about pets. All are pet owners who care about the health of their own pets and enjoy sharing the knowledge they learn at Natural Pawz to other pet parents. In addition, we are advocates for the local pet community and have donated over one half million pounds of food to shelters, rescues and other pet focused groups.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Starting this business without having a retail background; when we started we did make some mistakes, but we were able to survive because we focused on our mission and vision to make a difference in the Houston pet community. Given what we accomplished in the past 12 years we would not do anything differently.
