Meet Bill Ellison of ASGi Homes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bill Ellison.

Bill, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was raised in poverty with the desire to do better and for my family to not go through the same hardships and troubles my mother went through to raise 4 children. We lived on welfare our entire childhood, literally standing in line at the church for the free powdered milk bread and cheese. In my teens, I spent some time in foster care due to physical abuse by my mother’s husband. I ran away from the foster facility and my mother’s husband told them to keep me and I spent the night in a county jail at 13 years old. My mother came to pick me up the next day and took me home.

As I grew up, I looked at myself as not part of my family, yet looking forward on how to do better. I worked at IBM in a co-op program in high school during my senior year, then for another year after I graduated. I had 2 children by age 20 and worked tirelessly to hold true to my promise that they would never grow up the way I did. I then worked for an environmental company traveling the USA setting up their computer systems for 5 years. At 24, my boss told me I should be in sales due to my gift of conversation and he introduced me to the president of a home building company.

November 1, 1995, I started selling new homes, won several sales awards and excelled to a 6 figure income. Mind you, by now, I was a complete outcast from my family because they all wanted me to pay their bills in addition to mine. In 1998, I started dating my wonderful wife, Colleen and we were married a year later in 1999. In 1999, I took a job building new homes for a small builder so I could learn how, then in 2001, I started my 1st construction company. I’ve had ups and downs as most do, but 17 years later we are doing very well, have done small jobs to million dollar jobs.

In 2013 my wife and I took in 3 wonderful children through the state foster program and 1 1/2 years later on May 1, 2015, we finalized their adoption. Now, Valerie (11), Jasmine (9) and Jon Ross (8) are living a wonderful and healthy life. In 2016 I started our now, very healthy NEW HOME building company, ASGi Homes. At ASGi Homes, we build affordable housing for people who can only afford a $100,000 home and not a $200-$250k home that most builders concentrate on.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
An entrepreneur never has a smooth road as I’m certain you have heard before. There are times when you don’t know where the next job is going to come from, how you will make the mortgage or even how you will put food on the table. 2006 came and put my company all but out of business until 2008. This was an extremely difficult time for many builders and construction companies across the nation.

For Houstonians, THEN CAME IKE!!! The tragic and catastrophic events of Hurricane Ike provided a springboard for many building companies to make their comeback. Funny, I saw a Ferrari once with a license plate that said “Thanks, Ike”… Other than that time in my career, we have run a fairly healthy company, never missed payroll and always made our way through. Our startup with ASGi Homes was rocky at 1st, but we are poised to build over 200 homes in 2018 and looking forward to the future.

ASGi Homes – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Our companies do all types of construction but specifically, All Services Group is a general contracting company specializing in outdoor kitchens and backyard remodeling. All Services Group installs outdoor kitchens for about 25 builders in the Houston market as well as doing many retail jobs throughout the area.

ASGi Homes builds homes now ranging from $85,000-$160,000’s primarily in Montgomery County. The company has been very successful at building homes that others don’t want to build or carry too much overhead to be able to have margin left on each job and it makes sense to even build. We have figured out how to both build affordable housing as well as maintain a profitable margin.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I am very proud of the support of my family in all my endeavors as well as my wife continually supporting me no matter what cliff I decide to jump off of. She is my rock and my foundation and if not for her continual support, I’m sure I would not be where I am today.
