Meet Blake Miller of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Blake Miller.

Hi Blake, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My first real gig in Houston was a Saturday morning boot camp class at Level One Fitness. Thankfully, I’ve now been their DJ for 4+ years. Through hearing me at the class, people contacted me to do private events. The private events lead me to buy my own speakers, create an Instagram, and tryout for club gigs. Now, I have many of Houston’s favorite clubs/lounges, artists, and two countries outside the U.S. on my resume.

When I first started at Level One Fitness I was doing it for free. When they officially brought me on I remember the owner told me the hourly rate and said “I’m sure you’re not getting that amount at a club”. I never saw myself playing at a club so I was thankful for whatever. I always remind myself of that story whenever I feel unsatisfied with where I’m currently at.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I always say there is no HR in the DJ industry. Because of this you will struggle with losing gigs without notice, getting paid late or not at all, and favoritism. For me, the biggest obstacle is my own entitlement. Whenever I miss out on an opportunity I wanted I remind myself to be patient, not take it personal, and remember where I started. If you continue to get better, meet the people in the positions you want to be in, and be patient, your time will come.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an open format DJ. I specialize in private events such as weddings, birthday parties, and corporate events. I also play at lounges and nightclubs in Houston. I’m most known for being the Saturday morning DJ at Level One Fitness. I’m most proud of my YouTube channel with over 3000 subscribers and 250,000 views in 5 months. What sets me apart from others is my range of music. My favorite genre is Dance (funk/house/disco), but I blend it with afrobeats, hip-hop, pop and r&b. This allows me to enjoy what I’m playing, while still bringing any room together.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Be patient and don’t take it personal. If the opportunity isn’t yours, it wasn’t for you.
