Meet DeKosha Robinson of Blessed Hands by Kosha in Northwest

Today we’d like to introduce you to DeKosha Robinson.

DeKosha, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in the Northeast Houston, Texas. Growing up I was raised by my grandmother, while my mother traveled on her job. My grandmother was a licensed stylist and nail technician at Arlene Williams beauty salon on Homestead in Northeast Houston. There were many times I would have to go to salon with my grandmother while she had clients to service. This is when I fell in love with the beauty and hair industry I would watch beautiful transformations and would be fascinated, those were the days when jheri curls and roller sets were a trending hairstyles.

Once I made it to 8th grade, my mom allowed me to comb my own hair, also I could wear eyeliner and lipgloss. I was too excited. I remember my mom would always say “Don’t never leave out the house looking any kind of way”, till this day I abide by those words. I had a chance to experiment on different hairstyles by myself, this is when I discovered hair extensions. I use to wet roller set my hair extensions and place them in the microwave to dry and the curls would come out so pretty and would last forever. My stepdad would fuss and say I’m burning hair in the microwave. Lol.

By the time I reached high school I began doing hair for family, and friends for extra money. Once I graduated, I enrolled in Medical school feeling like I was making a great career choice. After six months into the program, I dropped out.

I began moving in the wrong directions in life that did not benefit of me having a successful future. But with God’s listening ear he steered me back in the right direction. In 2009, I enrolled at Behold Beauty Academy. I was above average due to my knowledge and experience within the hair industry. I graduated within nine months as planned, but I did not pursue to take the Stateboard Exam due to being intimidated.

I then began working into the corporate world again at a department store and doing hair on the side. I worked myself up into supervisor, then within a year and a half, I was robbed at gunpoint in the store. Needless to say, that made a drastic change in my life, as to I no longer foreseen a career in retail. After being unemployed for a year, it allowed me to think what I was good at and what was my passion.

I began working at a call center, where I became supervisor after ten months. I stayed employed there for 6 1/2 years, and yet I continued to do hair part-time. After being employed with the company, and not seeing a pay increase within four years I knew it was definitely time for a change.

I can remember studying for my Stateboard Exam while at work multitasking within the two. It had been know 14 years since I graduated from beauty school. I began studying the exam through Google for the written portion, and YouTube for the practical portion of the Stateboard Exam. By God’s grace, I passed the first time.

I became infatuated with lace wigs in 2014, I researched the technique, paid others to provide service, and took classes to perfect the technique. I was mesmerized by how natural the style looked. I would spend hours researching and practicing the technique on myself. I then became comfortable to offer the service to my clients. I started posting my work on Facebook hair groups in Houston. I received a lot of great feedback and built a larger clientele in which I was comfortable to step out on faith and quit my job and follow my passion.

Over the years I have grown interest with women with hair loss, cancer, cancer survivors, lupus, or any other medically related reasons to enhance their beauty with natural looks. This is where my slogan was inspired from.

During my research with lace wigs and other hair extension services, I found that this was a perfect to offer to help women gain their confidence back.

I started posting my hairstyles on social media platforms, I received a lot of feedback and gained a lot more clientele. Then I stepped out on faith and was comfortable enough to quit my job.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. During the beginning of becoming a full-time stylist, some weeks were not always good as others due to being a weave specialist I have to constantly promote, due to my client will not need another service up to eight weeks. There were many times I didn’t have my booth rent or didn’t have enough. I’m very thankful to the salon owners who would waive it or allow me to pay it when I can.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Blessed Hands by Kosha – what should we know?
