Jim, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always been in construction doing remodeling, room additions, and building new homes. And I noticed everybody was getting a pool.
I had been contracting out the pool business to another company. But it was steady business, and it was a good fit for me, so I went in the direction of pool construction. With my expertise in pool construction, Blue Haven hired me. I started with the company in 2000, and they are like family.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been smooth, for the most part. Back in 2008-09, the economy was down, and with all the home foreclosures there was little interest in new pools. Those were lean years, but it was the same for all home improvement contractors.
Now consumer financing is happening again, and things are really moving. Plus, Blue Haven has a national lending network, so we have even more options for helping clients land a pool loan.

Our veteran pool designers work with clients to create affordable, custom pools with options like fountains, tanning shelves, rock waterfalls, quartz interior finishes, and many other decorative and functional features. And we provide free in-home estimates.
We’re proud of the company’s lifespan—the Blue Haven name has been around since 1954. Not a lot of places can say that. We offer extended warranties on pool equipment and a limited lifetime structural warranty as well.
What were you like growing up? Personality wise, interest wise, etc.
I was a California kid who grew up surfing. And I traveled the country as an amateur kickboxer—before MMA was so big on TV like it is now. I think kickboxing taught me patience. I’m a pretty laid-back guy, and I use that in the pool business. I’m good at listening to people’s concerns and solving problems.

- People call us and ask how much it’s going to cost. We say that our simple pools typically start in the mid-$20,000 range. Our designers work closely with clients on their budgets. You can spend whatever you like, depending on what you want and the kinds of options you choose.
