Meet Blythe Strait of SCM Design Group in The Woodlands

Today we’d like to introduce you to Blythe Strait.

Blythe, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I fell into the Interior Design and Remodeling industry by pure luck! I have a Master’s degree in Elementary Education, I tried teaching and decided I wanted something else. I became a Project Manager for MCI. In 2011, we moved to The Woodlands for my husband’s career, I decided then I wanted to try something new. I found a job with a small Interior Design and Remodeling firm. I quickly learned I liked the remodeling piece but it was on a very small scale. When an opportunity arose with SCM Design Group I made the leap.

Has it been a smooth road?
There have been challenges along the way, one being the construction piece of remodeling. What goes on behind the walls in terms of framing, electrical, plumbing, etc…All before the first tile or hardwood floor is installed. I have learned that important piece of the remodeling process at SCM Design Group. This piece has become even more important for the initial meetings with our clients. The ability to tell the client if a wall can be taken out, water supplies moved, and/or cooktops moved to other parts of the kitchen at the first appointment helps set the client’s expectations and also builds trust, all from the very beginning.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the SCM Design Group story. Tell us more about the business.
SCM Design Group specializes in meeting all our clients’ needs throughout their remodel. From the first appointment, creating a detailed quote so there are no surprises along the way, creating 3D’s of the space, creating a schedule, shopping with the client to stay within their budget, and project managing the entire remodel every day until the very end that is what sets us apart. Many of our repeat clients remark that what they like is that we take care of every single detail, large and small. We strive to take the stress out of remodeling. Our Project Managers stop by each project sometimes 2-3 times a day to ensure each trade is performing exactly what we want, fielding questions, correcting mistakes…all behind the scene so the client is happy. SCM Design Group has every trade covered, painters, electricians, plumbers, HVAC, framers, floor and tile installers, etc. Many of these trades have worked with SCM Design Group for 10+ years, they are professional and know the standard we are looking for. I am proud at the end of a remodel that our clients are satisfied and enjoyed the process.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see the Interior Design and Remodeling industry having to step up the game. We hear horror stories of companies not completing work and/or completing the work incorrectly. This scares clients, makes them weary of inviting any company into their homes. SCM Design Group understands that our clients are taking a risk and we reassure them with every step, ensuring the remodel goes smoothly and stress free. We always tell our clients to get multiple quotes for their project and call references. I do believe clients are becoming more educated before getting into a remodel and this industry is going to have to earn their respect.
