Today we’d like to introduce you to Branden Morris.
Branden, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was laid off from JP Morgan Chase in December of 2013. After brief attempts to secure another job, the desire to start my own business grew. However, based on my skill sets, I felt I needed a compliment. During the summer of 2014, I was hosting an art exhibition for my college alumni during our national convention, and I approached my friend Aveion Hall about starting a business with me. I found out he may have been open to exploring other opportunities. At the time, he was an Engineer for Chrysler in Detroit. He said we were open and asked me to put a proposal together. My idea was to start a consulting firm, and I figured we would make a great pair since he is a highly technical person and I am more business development and management-oriented. I took the next 30 days to create the proposal and after presenting it to him, he agreed. We then proceeded to start Basal Solutions on July 29, 2014. This company would focus on Engineering and Business Consulting, with our 1st major contract with Chrysler. Over the next couple of years, we landed contracts with large entities like NASA and Karma Automotive, along with smaller contracts providing various business consulting services.
In 2016, Baton Rouge experienced a massive flood and the resulting damage left many homes affected. Aveion’s in-laws were affected and he decided to mobilize some of his cousins to meet in Baton Rouge and work on the in-law’s house. What started as a volunteer effort quickly turned into us, forming Basal Construction. We spent the next year rehabbing multiple homes affected by the flood and building our brand. We eventually brought the crew to Houston and added more people to become a full-service construction company. We have since evolved into full property development and light commercial construction.
Due to Aveion and I start the second company, we decided to create a MH Basal Group holding company. This allowed us to sell equity ownership shares in Basal Solutions and Basal Construction in an effort to create an infrastructure for easier growth and expansion. We now have a diverse team of stakeholders who all actively contribute to the value we deliver.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Most start-up businesses don’t have a smooth road. This is also true with us. Like most small business startups, our biggest challenge has been cash flow. We really never had a problem with getting business, but we soon learned that collecting payment for services on time is a huge challenge. We feel we have a strong corporate culture that attracts some really dynamic people to work with us.
Tell us about your company. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?

We have a full training department that offers both an in-person and virtual training experience in Lean 6 Sigma, Financial Analysis, Credit Analysis, Revenue Recognition, and other disciplines. Our Marketing division can provide a range of services, including Marketing Strategy formation and implementation, building and managing websites, Social Media management, professional writing services, and logo design. Our IT division manages internet security, software integration, and server management services for small businesses.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I really don’t think we would have changed anything major. That takes time, and we’ve been around for over 6 years and we’re growing. Growth and success happens from both the positive experiences and the negative ones.
