Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandi Carter.
Brandi, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m originally from Louisiana and I can remember growing up just being the outsider in my family and my peers. Not too many people looked like me when it came to size I was the “ fat girl with pretty eyes.” One of the things that I did feel like connected me with others was fashion. I always entered pageants, modeling contests, and re-constructing my own looks it made me feel seen. Once I moved to Houston in late 2013 I felt like I was literally starting life over. I enrolled at TSU and it set the tone for me today. I launched my own organization that catered to women who had similar interests and daily struggles that I had. Anxiety, depression, insecurities etc. . It was a great opportunity to pour into younger women my life experiences as well. I’ve had a history of domestic violence and many days I didn’t think I would survive. God has kept me honest. For years, my friends would ask me “sis, when is the clothing line dropping?” Or ask for me to be their personal stylist or shopper. I always knew deep down having a clothing boutique was a dream and I never thought I could pull it off and boom here I am!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
ABSOLUTELY NOT lol. I’m my very own worst enemy. I critique myself so much because everything has to be perfect. My anxiety gets the best of me and I overthink which delays me to be consistent. I’m the CEO, Social media manager, sales rep, model and so much more. One of the hardest things is attracting customers who’ve never heard of my brand and gaining their trust that I’m delivering quality to them. But it’s a work in progress for sure.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University with a bachelor’s in education and decided that was the route for me.
I enrolled at Texas Southern University once I moved here and graduated in Clinical Laboratory Science (yes, I’m a nerd, lol).
But my calling has always been working in Hospitality, and listen it’s not for the weak lol at all. I love helping people and just doing what I can. I don’t like small spaces so I’m always moving and pushing to be better.
I’ll say I’m best known for my spicy spirit. I don’t take no mess or drama. And I’m a woman of my word honestly. If I say I’m going to do it. That’s just it.
What sets me apart from everyone else would be just my energy and my raw genuine personality. I pride myself in just me authentically me. I don’t fake the funk.
I’m most proud of being a mom. I love my son sooooo much he literally makes me whole and better as a person.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I would say whatever it is you want. Don’t stop until you get it. Failure comes but all you need is one yes. Give yourself time to grow don’t rush your process.
