Meet Brandi Mathis of The Luminary Space in Southwest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandi Mathis.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Brandi. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born and raised in Houston, TX. I grew up on the Southwest side of Houston and after graduating from Westbury High School, I attended and became the first-generation college graduate from Stephen F. Austin State University (SFASU) in 2015. My love for media and extroverted personality came at a very early age. In school, I was always involved in some type of extracurricular activity that allowed me to be myself. My life came to an abrupt halt in 2012 after I had been diagnosed with Leukemia.

That was a life-changing experience for me. I went from living my best life as a freshman in college to feeling like I was living in a nightmare that I couldn’t wake up from. But when I tell you that God doesn’t give you anything that you can’t handle, I mean it! That year changed me for the better. I began to do what I loved, which inclosed coordinating and hosting events at my university, giving back to the community and being unapologetically myself. After graduation, I moved back home to Houston and began “adulting.” I began a career at a financial institution that taught me how to budget, save and improve my credit. It also taught me to ALWAYS have multiple streams of income and that is how The Luminary Space was born.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has definitely not been a smooth road… at all. My biggest struggle was overcoming cancer and persevering like everything was “ok.” I went through chemo for nine months while still taking 15 hours of classes online to ensure I didn’t fall too far behind and lived a life full of prayer and faith. Fast forward to 2016 and I realized that having more than one source is income is key to putting myself in a better position and to also build wealth for generations to come. Procrastination was a huge component in actually starting The Luminary Space officially. I had always done digital marketing, websites and branding for my friends but never took it to the next level. Once I realized that I was blessed with skills that could help people bring their personal and business dreams to fruition, I knew that I had to begin putting things into action.

We’d love to hear more about your business.

I am most proud of the versatility in the skills that I have begun to learn and even master. These are skills that I pass on to my friends and family that are wanting to learn. These are also skills that I will be able to pass on to my children so that they can be self-sufficient and multifaceted. What sets The Luminary Space apart from the rest is my approach. I am as transparent as possible when it comes to my experience and how I consult my clients. We are all here to be our best selves and not everything has to be a competition.

What were you like growing up?
I was definitely an outgoing child. I always liked to be involved in dance, choir, debate team, etc. My mother is Salvadorian and my father, African American, so growing up was a little different for me. Nowadays, there are mixed children running around all over the place but in the 90’s it was a sight for sore eyes. To this day, I celebrate and embrace both amazing sides of myself.
