Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Surface.
Brandon, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My story begins with me playing with my two year old daughter with sidewalk chalk in the driveway of my home in Katy. I had a roofing contractor approach me to ask if anyone had inspected my roof after a recent hail storm in the summer of 2011. I told him that I had not and would not mind if he gave my roof an inspection. My roof did have hail damage. The roofer walked me through the insurance process and I was able to get a new roof minus my deductible. I was teaching and coaching at the time and didn’t have a lot of extra money to spend on a deductible but I knew my roof needed to be replaced. The roofer told me he would pay me $200 for every referral that I could give to him. I was able to give him enough referrals to pay for a large chunk of my deductible. He was so impressed that I had given him so many referrals that he told me that I should consider roofing sales. I could work it around my schedule and all I would need is a ladder and some special roofing boots to walk and inspect roofs. He showed me how to inspect and what to look for. The very first week in roofing sales I sold five jobs in my neighborhood. Roofing sales came very easy for me. I continued to teach and coach for two more years but when I started making more money on the side with roofing than what I was making teaching I knew something had to give. I decided after 10 years in the classroom that being a roofing contractor was for me, I bounced around selling for a few different companies until I found a good fit with Birdcreek Roofing. The owner of Birdcreek was a friend of a friend of mine. I started with Birdcreek as a salesman and after a year worked my way into an area director position for the Houston market. This past spring I felt like it was time to start my own company. After a long meeting with the owner of Birdcreek we decided that becoming a franchise owner of Birdcreek was the best option for me and the company. I am now owner of Birdcreek Roofing and Construction and things could not be better.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Things were not always smooth. I sold for a few companies that were not as reputable as I thought they were. It taught me to be very cautious for who I was selling for. There are roofing companies out there that promise warranties and a good salary that don’t honor their word. I was having to spend my own money and time in a lot of instances to cover warranty’s that the company was not honoring. I treat every one of my customers as if they are a close friend or family member. I never wanted any one to think that I didn’t honor my word. When I found Birdcreek I knew that it was a company that stood behind its salesman and honored warranties.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am Houston franchise owner of Birdcreek Roofing and Construction. Our company is best known for residential roofing in the greater Houston area. We specialize in re-roofing homes after storm damage has occurred. We also do sheet rock, interior and exterior painting, gutters and siding. I am most proud of the fact that we have exceptional customer service. I believe that what sets us apart from other companies is that we have created a culture within the company that believes that we are there to help our customers first. We treat every customer, vendor and our crews like a close friend or family member. No one wants to have to deal with damage to their property. We understand that. It is important for us to make the process as pleasant and non-stressful as we possibly can. With construction things don’t always go right but we always make it right in the end.
What were you like growing up?
I grew up in a rural area just east of College Station. My father is a farmer/rancher and owned a feed store and fertilizer plant. I grew up learning how to really work hard. When I had the chance I loved hunting, fishing and playing sports. I played football, basketball and baseball in high school. I loved competing and being around sports. I graduated from Texas A&M with a degree in Kinesiology and History.
