Today we’d like to introduce you to Bria Morris and John McCrory.
Bria and John, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
John and I (Bria) were at a time in both of our lives where we wanted to start dating for marriage. We were from different states, different backgrounds, different EVERYTHING! However, we both found ourselves on an online platform looking for our significant other at the exact same time. From that moment on, we’ve been inseparable. We met in-person January 2018, moved to Houston June 2019, got engaged in July 2019, and are planning a beautiful wedding set for October 10, 2020.
During our time together in quarantine, we had a moment where we wanted to share our story as an interracial-interabled couple in Houston, Texas. What better way to do so than with a podcast, and then the title “This is… US” was born. John is blind, Caucasian, and from Louisiana, while I’m African-American and from East Texas. Besides our love for food and travel, our absolute love is for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We put him first everyday and I hope you’re able to see that in our episodes.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Every bump we have ran into along the way, whether it was financial, physical, or emotional, we put on our Armour of God and took the stand against the devil.
Please tell us more about your work. What do you guys do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
I, Bria, am a certified teacher specializing in English Language Arts and Reading for 4th-8th grade. I’ve obtained an Associate’s Degree in Science and a Bachelor’s of Science Degree majoring in Speech Communication, minoring in History. John received his Master’s Degree in Sport’s Administration and a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. As a couple, we are working on receiving other certifications to continue our growth.
What sets “This is… US” podcast apart from others is that we aren’t afraid to talk about the things that hurt. We also aren’t afraid to push buttons when needed. Nevertheless, we strive to keep our episodes under 35 minutes to make it an “enjoyable” drive home from work. Also, you don’t see many interracial-interabled couples that have podcasts.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
John has had a childhood that involved surgeries and multiple doctor’s visits, but he also got to meet famous people and athletes because his family didn’t know if he would permanently lose his vision. I thank God that he’s able to see me at the close-range distance that he can. As for myself, I had a “privileged” childhood growing up. I don’t ever remember not getting anything that I wanted. However, I did have to work extremely hard and my mom didn’t slack on my siblings and myself when it came to school. As children, we both enjoy being with our families and being in God’s presence.
