Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Marvin
Hi Brian, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After serving for 20 years and retiring from the Active Duty Army, I decided to stay in Houston and open Renzo Gracie Houston Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy in 2014 to teach Self Defense, Jiu Jitsu, and Mentor people through Jiu Jitsu. I had been a Wrestler and Grappler since I was 11 or 12 and have see the valuable impact wrestling and Jiu Jitsu have in peoples lives. Jiu Jitsu directly helps you build confidence through complex problem solving, and developing leadership skills.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
COVID was definitely a severe challenge, the rules that were being imposed made it very difficult for people to make personal decisions for their own safety. We were teaching multiple interactive online classes daily with grappling dummies until we could get back to training together.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am most proud of the mentoring I do for a variety of people. I help parents with the development of their children, I help adults deal with life’s stresses and show them they are more capable than they believe, I help Disabled Combat Veterans transitioning out of the Military us Jiu Jitsu as a form of therapy and physical fitness through the We Defy Foundation (a 501.3c nonprofit) of which I’m a past President and Founding Member.
