Meet Brian Miller of Miller Grossbard Advisors in Midtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Miller.

Brian, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
The firm started over 26 years ago with my two partners who were looking to do something different. They left their previous firm (one was a partner and one was a senior manager) to go out on their own and break away from the traditional accounting firm practice. They wanted to work with entrepreneurs who had an interest in working with professional advisors with that same mindset.

They worked hand in hand with their clients and were able to build a strong practice that was well respected.

I joined the team as a staff member 14 years ago after working for a few years at PriceWaterhouseCoopers. The mindset and culture of the multinational accounting firms wasn’t for me. I worked my way up through company and became their third partner 4 years ago.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It wasn’t always smooth but the bumps in the road are what give you the experience needed to be better for your clients. The traditional accounting profession is sometimes tough and requires long hours. I knew that in order to be a partner one day I had to get out on my own and develop my own set of clients to bring in new clients to the Firm.

I had to accomplish this while handling my day to day duties as a staff person as I worked my way up through the management ranks. Sometimes it was tough to handle both the roles of trying to network and bring in clients while making sure my current clients and tasks still felt they were my #1 priority.

However, the hard work paid off and now I can say I truly get to do what I enjoy. I have a great team that helps me tackle the day-to-day projects we work on for our clients and I can spend my time consulting with clients and making sure we are exceeding their expectations by making the complex simple so they can think forward.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Miller Grossbard Advisors is a full service consulting and accounting Firm with professional advisors that help entrepreneurs and privately held companies with many different needs. At the core of our relationships, we focus on making the complex simple so our clients can think forward. We have your typical tax services and assurance services but try to supercharge those. We work with our clients to help plan what taxes they will owe by doing planning and consulting along the way. Some choices that companies make have very different tax implications and we want to have conversations with our clients before they make these decisions so that they are making the best decision not only financially but from a tax perspective as well.

We also have a strong and growing consulting and outsourced accounting group that we refer to as F.A.S.T. (Finance Accounting Support Team). They work with clients who prefer to focus on their core business and not run an in-house accounting team. We fully outsource the client’s accounting department and function as their outsourced Controller or CFO. We help clients with their cash flow models, budgeting, accounting and other finance needs. We are the client’s right hand and are fully integrated into their day to day operations.

I’m most proud of us as a company as we don’t settle for the status quo. We have never let our size dictate what we can accomplish. Our clients come to us for solutions and we will go out and find them. Most of the time our team has the answers in house but when we don’t we go out and find the expert around the country that can assist. Our client’s want our help to solve problems and look to us for that expertise. We have strong relationships with our clients and they don’t care if the answer is from within or outside the Firm, just as long as we help them meet their financial goals.

I think what sets us apart is our desire to have that close relationship and that is at every level of our team. From the first day you join MGA, you are given that chance to forge relationships with our clients. Everyone is connected to the client and not just the partners. This allows us to work efficiently with our clients and to have the whole team invested in the success of our clients and the Firm.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was rather quiet and shy and not as outgoing as I am now. I think I really gained that confidence and found what I like to do during college. I was able to find opportunities to be a leader in classes and social activities and that gave me the confidence I needed. I’ve always loved college sports and knew that I would go to the University of Texas. I also loved golf as a kid and would play whenever I could.

Today both UT sports and golf are still high up on my priority list.
