Today we’d like to introduce you to Briana Coursey.
Briana, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m originally from South Central Los Angeles (Compton). Growing up there was inspiring, you have from the culture or minority’s to fashion oh and you can’t forget the fashion scene. I first started watching America’s Next Top Model at 11 and knew fashion was what I wanted to be in growing up. I went on to try out when I was 17 but didn’t make it. From there, I joined the US Army and became a Military Policewoman, my military ended about six months shy of my five years contract due to back injuries. So I found myself in Houston afterwards and since being here I’ve been featured on Great Day Houston, Fox 26 news, a couple of radio interviews here and there. Worked with the fashion House Tribe of Dumo. All because of African Fashion Week Houston. It’s changed my creative career for the better. This year I’m their model coordinator and I helped with the creative direction.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been easy. With being a single parent having to manage and work a full-time job and still try to have a creative career has been challenging. Then the fear of becoming complacent with your 9-5 and not fully pursuing your dreams. With being a creative, there’s a window of opportunity for so many jobs and exposure then it’s quiet nothing is happening, then it’s back to your regular job.
Please tell us about DeAhni by Shelik.
DeAhni by Shelik is a contemporary clothing brand for the everyday working woman, like me! You should be seeing a collection from DeAhni soon by the end of 2020! I do fashion styling and creative direction on the side and I manage models here and there getting them work. It’s one of those “what don’t I do?”.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Definitely going to the beach back in Cali. The beach has become my sanctuary.
