Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittani Persha.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Brittani. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My first job out of graduate school was working at Child Protective Services (CPS). I was not certain of exactly what I wanted my career to be, but I have always loved working with children and am fascinated about learning people’s stories of overcoming adversity. Through my experiences at CPS, I realized my passion for working with not only children and their families but people in general who had gone through very difficult experiences. After a few years at CPS, I transitioned to a therapist in a group practice. I spent the next 9 years working with children and families as a team member in 2 different group therapy practices in San Antonio and Houston.
Throughout my journey as a therapist, I am inspired by clients on a daily basis. I feel honored by their willingness to share their story with me and blessed to be part of their journey towards healing. My clients continue to teach me and show me the true meaning of courage, strength, vulnerability, and perseverance.
My personal journey during those years has also had a major influence on where I am today. During my first 10 years as a therapist, I moved twice, got married and had two children. Needless to say, I was learning and growing in my work as a therapist and life were also teaching me a great deal! When the time felt right, I took the leap and started Brittani Persha Counseling. The inspiration behind BPC is my passion for working with children and parents. My goal was to provide a place for children and their families to get the support and guidance they deserve, at times when life is at its hardest. Although I was enjoying my work with clients, I deeply missed collaborating with other therapists and providing families that team of therapists you get at a group practice. A year after making the decision to expand to a group practice, I am privileged to have four amazing therapists working alongside me.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t know if there is such a thing as a smooth road, but my journey has definitely had its share of obstacles. I think one of the biggest struggles was moving twice, once to San Antonio and then eventually coming back home to the Houston area. With both moves, I had to start from scratch in so many ways – clients, knowing the resources in the area and connecting with other therapists. Although all the rebuilding was exhausting, I also think it has helped me be a more well-rounded therapist.
The other big challenge was transitioning from a solo practice to a group practice. Expanding BPC brought many obstacles including; finding the right therapists that had the training and skills needed for the type of clients we serve and juggling all the other responsibilities that come with managing a practice. Once I found the right therapists, all the other parts, that felt so overwhelming at one time, seemed to start to fall into place.
My ongoing challenge is balancing it all, both professional and personal life. Being a small business owner, there are always things to be done. Managing my time is always a work in progress. I love what I do and know I am so blessed to have a career that brings me so much joy, but my family is, of course, my priority and I strive to maintain a schedule that allows for plenty of time for play, laughter, and enjoyment in my personal life. It also does help that my children love visiting “Mommy’s office.” They proudly tell others that their mommy helps kids with big feelings and has really cool toys!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Brittani Persha Counseling – what should we know?
Brittani Persha Counseling specializes in child and family therapy services. We are specifically geared towards children ages 2-12 years old and their families. We incorporate play therapy in working with kids and witness the power of the play every day in our office. Play is children’s natural form of communication. Through play is how children explore their world, work through the things they are struggling with, gain understanding about their emotions, develop coping tools and learn to connect with people in a positive way (to name just a few ways to play therapy helps).
Our counseling services are most beneficial for kids who have a really hard time navigating and managing their big feelings. Sometimes, children express their overwhelming emotions through tantrums, meltdowns, behavioral problems, severe anxiety and difficulty connecting with others. All our therapists incorporate play therapy, parent-child therapy, family therapy, and brain-informed treatment.
Along with our child and family therapy services, BPC also provides therapy for children and adults who have experienced trauma/PTSD. Several of the therapists at BPC is trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy). EMDR is an evidence-based therapy that has been proven to be incredibly effective in treating trauma. We utilize EMDR, along with other tools, to help clients relieve their PTSD symptoms (nightmares, anxiety, depression, etc.) that are holding them back and help clients find themselves again.
As a practice, I am most proud of how we encourage and support each other in continuing to grow and learn every day. Our clients continue to inspire and teach us, and we are committed to staying informed about the latest research enabling us to provide the most effective treatment approaches.
I feel like there are two things that make us unique at BPC. First, we ALWAYS include both the children and parents in the therapy process, integrating play therapy and strengthening the family connection. Second, our goal is NOT to provide “quick fixes” but instead, we are invested in providing long-term change. This usually means diving deeper underneath the emotional struggles and gaining clarity about what the child’s outbursts are trying to communicate to us. This information is KEY to lasting change.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I feel that my success is largely due to me finding a career that I am truly passionate about. I also think that my ability to connect with people and help them access their potential greatly impacts my success, both with therapists that work for me and clients.
