Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Sundquist.
Hi Brittany, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Brittany, but everyone calls me B. I am 28 years old and live in Katy, TX. I guess my story starts in a little town outside of Waco, TX called Speegleville. My dad is a farmer, so I grew up on the family farm with my little brother who is 10 years younger than me. I wouldn’t say I had the easiest childhood but I was lucky to have many people around me who cared for me. I ended up leaving home during my high school years and ended up in some not so pretty situations. My youth pastor at the time, Beth, ended up taking me out of that situation and invited me to come live with her and her friend Brenda. The two of them really helped me become the person I am today and really ignited my passion for people and community. As I got older, I have always wrestled with my past and understanding the struggles I have overcome, but I have always been someone who strives for positivity and success. I also think that my struggles have shaped the best parts of me. My heart for people and ability to have compassion and understanding for those around me is definity a product of my childhood, and I would never change that.
I met my husband in 2013. We both worked at Freebirds in Waco, TX. I was his manager…oops! All jokes asides, we fell in love, got married and welcomed our son Zander in 2014. After graduating from Baylor my husband accepted a position in Houston so we made the big move. I was a stay at home mom for 3 years after moving here. Some of the hardest but most meaningful years of my life. When we bought out first home in Katy in 2019, and our son started Kindergarten, it was time for me to get back into society…basically. So I chose to go back to work a Starbucks. Got back into management, and back to routine.
I loved Starbucks, don’t get me wrong. I loved being a part of everyone’s morning, I love coffee, and I love the friendships and connections that I have made there, but I wasn’t quite happy. I guess I never felt like I was using my full potential. It was a lot of the “same stuff different day” and I wanted to be pushed intellectually. So I left….took some time to figure out where I really wanted to be. I knew I wanted to help people and build relationships, and that is why I ultimately decided on going into Real Estate.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, personally or professionally. Focusing on the professional side though, I knew that I would face struggles. Not only did I decide to change my entire career at 28 years old, I don’t exactly fit the “look” of a real estate agent. I have colored hair, facial piercings, and tons of tattoos. I knew from the beginning that I would face judgment not only from my look, but also from being a woman. I decided early on though that I wouldn’t change myself to fit in. There may be people who decide to not work with me based on appearances but that is their choice. If anything it pushes me to work harder. I know that my appearance may not “sell” me, so my brains and professionalism have to. I am consistently trying to become better and learn more so that I stand out.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Realtor with eXp Realty and I serve the Greater Houston area and surrounding cities. I work for buyers, sellers, or even people looking to lease. I absolutely love what I do, not because I get a paycheck (although nice) but because I get to work with all kinds of people and experience some of life’s biggest moments with them. I have had many friends who have had awful experiences with real estate agents due to judgment, whether from their appearance, religion, or financial position and it breaks my heart. I hope I can make a difference, even if it is small, just by being kind and offering a safe space for people to be themselves in one of the most important and stressful transactions of their life. I pride myself in being a straightforward Realtor who tries my best to help my clients understand the entire process. I encourage my clients to ask ALL the questions and to never feel like an inconvenience. I truly care for people, and I think that is what is most important. I am a member of the National Association of Realtors and an active member of the LGBTQ+ Real Estate Alliance. Every house is unique, every human is unique, and every situation is unique. My only hope is to create an environment that is welcoming and help people move onto their next adventure.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories is when I was digging for arrowheads at my Grandma’s house. I was probably 12 or 13 and I had gone out into the woods with my Uncle Gary to dig late in the afternoon. Earlier that morning, someone had killed a copperhead snake and left it next to the tree we were digging next to. I knew that the dead snake was there, however, my Uncle did not. So we were digging and talking down in the hole when all of a sudden my Uncle Gary threw me so hard to the other side of the hole, grabbed his shovel and started hacking away at the dead snake. I pulled myself out of the dirt, started pulling the leaves from my hair and busted out laughing. My Uncle was in complete shock, not understanding why I was laughing and as I began to explain that he just saved me from a dead snake, he started laughing as well. My Uncle died from Covid in September last year on my husband and I’s anniversary. We miss him so much. My memories with him will always be some of my favorites. He was someone who always believed in me, even when I didn’t believe in myself.
