Meet Byron Godfrey of Misfit Strength and Conditioning in The Heights

Today we’d like to introduce you to Byron Godfrey.

Byron, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As a gym, we began a little over five years ago. After bouncing around other private studios, I gathered a small group of trainers and we decided to start our own gym. Along with my good friend and business partner, we took everything we had and invested it in a small garage style building that would become Misfit Strength and Conditioning.

Today, we have evolved into more of a group training facility which focuses on functional fitness, strength, and conditioning. Of the original group of trainers/coaches, on one remains (Chris Courtright). We have added 7 additional trainers/coaches and are planning to start the process of opening another location in east Houston within the next year.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has been a steady upward climb, with few bumps and potholes. The most testing part is learning about business. As a former Rice University football player, I have an extended background in sports. So, I find myself reading, working with mentors, listening to as many podcasts as I can to understand how to grow.

Please tell us about Misfit Strength and Conditioning.
Misfit Strength and Conditioning is a garage style fitness facility whose primary focus is functional strength and conditioning, with an emphasis on the mind being primary. We believe that in order to build a strong body, you must first build a strong mind. What we are most proud of is that we have built a community of like-minded individuals, who are willing to build, encourage, and struggle to improve as total human beings. We stress positivity and encouragement. The only competition we seek is with ourselves.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nothing. I don’t regret the mistakes. They have been the greatest lessons, for which I can ask.
