Today we’d like to introduce you to Camecia Clark.
Hi Camecia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey into becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC-S) was deeply influenced by my personal experiences and the environment I grew up in. My curiosity about the complexities of the human mind and behavior, sparked by the dysfunctions within my extended family, led me on a path of exploration and understanding.
Growing up amidst issues like child molestation, physical abuse, drug abuse, and mental illness in my family was challenging. However, instead of turning away from these challenges, I chose to confront them head-on and seek answers. This drive to understand the root causes behind these issues is commendable and likely served as the foundation for my career as a therapist.
My realization that my family’s struggles were not unique but rather reflective of broader societal issues likely motivated me to pursue formal education and training in counseling. Becoming an LPC allowed me to gain the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to help individuals and families navigate through their own challenges and find healing.
My personal journey, marked by a quest for understanding and a desire to make a positive difference, undoubtedly shapes the way I approach my work as a therapist. My empathy, insight, and commitment to helping others are invaluable assets in my role as a counselor.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey to building our group practice hasn’t been easy, especially starting out in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. We had to shut down our office for a year and shift to telehealth, which was a huge change for us. Learning to navigate this new way of doing things, all on our own, was challenging. There weren’t coaches or social media influencers to guide us; we had to rely on trial and error.
But despite the hurdles, we persevered. Today, we have two offices, five therapists, and we’re even looking to hire administrative staff. Surviving COVID-19 and continuing to build our practice has been a testament to our resilience and determination.
While there are more resources and support available now, we’re proud of how far we’ve come through our own grit and perseverance. Learning from our mistakes and overcoming obstacles has made us stronger and more capable. As we move forward, we’ll keep pushing ourselves to reach even greater heights.
As you know, we’re big fans of Visions of Serenity Counseling Inc. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
As a group of Black female therapists, we are deeply committed to meeting the mental health needs of the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) community. We understand the systemic and intergenerational trauma, discrimination, and marginalization that many BIPOC individuals face, and we are dedicated to providing culturally responsive and affirming care.
Our approach to therapy is rooted in understanding the unique experiences and challenges that BIPOC individuals encounter. We recognize the impact of racism, colonialism, and other forms of oppression on mental health and well-being. Our goal is to create a therapeutic environment where BIPOC clients feel validated, understood, and empowered to navigate the complexities of their lives.
We offer a range of therapeutic modalities that are tailored to address the specific needs and concerns of BIPOC individuals. Whether clients are struggling with racial trauma, identity issues, intergenerational trauma, or other mental health challenges, we provide a supportive space where they can explore their feelings, heal from past wounds, and cultivate resilience.
What sets us apart is our commitment to centering the experiences and voices of BIPOC individuals in our therapeutic practice. We recognize the importance of cultural humility, ongoing education, and advocacy in our work. We strive to create a practice that is inclusive, accessible, and welcoming to all members of the BIPOC community.
In addition to individual therapy, we offer group therapy, workshops, and community events that specifically address the needs of BIPOC individuals. We are dedicated to promoting mental health awareness, resilience, and healing within the BIPOC community and beyond.
Overall, we are here to support BIPOC individuals on their journey to healing, empowerment, and self-discovery. We believe that everyone deserves access to affirming and culturally competent mental health care, and we are committed to being a trusted resource for the BIPOC community.
Any big plans?
At our group practice, we’re eagerly looking ahead to the future and are actively planning to broaden our impact within the community. We’re dedicated to stepping up our outreach and engagement efforts, which includes hosting another mental health expo, continuing our cherished yearly mother-daughter event, and rolling out new programs to enhance our client services.
Our mental health expo serves as a vital platform for education, support, and networking. It’s an invaluable opportunity for us to connect with the community, raise awareness about mental health and wellness, and provide valuable resources and information to those in need. We’re thrilled at the prospect of hosting another event and furthering our mission to promote mental well-being.
The yearly mother-daughter event is particularly close to our hearts as it fosters strong and nurturing relationships between mothers and daughters. Beyond being a celebration of this special bond, it offers a meaningful opportunity for families to deepen their connection and communication. We’re committed to continuing this tradition and nurturing these vital relationships within our community.
In addition to these initiatives, we’re excited to introduce an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) to offer more intensive and structured treatment for clients requiring extra support. This program will enhance the accessibility and effectiveness of our services, ensuring that we can meet the diverse needs of our clients and provide comprehensive care.
Furthermore, we’re integrating case management into our practice to offer holistic support to our clients. Our dedicated case managers will assist clients in navigating various systems and accessing resources to address their broader social determinants of health, ensuring they receive comprehensive care tailored to their individual needs.
Overall, our commitment remains steadfast: to serve our community by providing high-quality, client-centered care. We’re enthusiastic about the future and are eager to continue innovating and expanding our offerings to better support the mental health and well-being of our clients and their families.
