Today we’d like to introduce you to Candice Mitchell.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Candice. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Celebrating others has always been a part of my DNA. It warms my heart to make someone feel special. I have been planning events for years for my family and close friends free of charge because it is something I absolutely love to do.
One day, I started getting those entrepreneurial urges suggesting there was more to life than just a 9-5. I put in work for my employer because I give 100% in whatever I do. I started thinking what would happen if I put all of this energy into my own business. I had several light bulb moments. I reached out to my family and friends and polled them to see what type of business they saw me running. A unanimous decision was made for me to officially start my event planning business. There were several comments like “about time” or “I knew this day would come.”
Long story short, I ended up creating my business (aka “my baby”) Spotlight Events Houston on December 31, 2016. I was now a for-profit business. I am a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and my line name is Spotlight. This is how I came up with the name of the business. It worked well as I always want to shine the spotlight on others to make them feel special. Since inception, I have invested my time, energy & money into forming a business that would create a stress-free experience for my clients and help them to create memories that will last a lifetime.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I am a firm believer that “nothing worth having comes easy.” It has actually been a bumpy road since the launch of the company. When I first started, I could not book a client to save my life. LOL! I was new in the creative industry and had to prove myself worthy.
I worked hard day and night on my marketing materials, styled shoots, going to networking events, and then BOOM clients started rolling in. I was on cloud 9! After a while, I had to start bringing on independent contractors to help because the business became bigger than my own two hands. Won’t He do it! The growing pains were there, but it was well worth it.
Although growth is good, I also learned the importance of self-care during this time. As entrepreneurs we sometimes want our vision to come to fruition so bad that we forget that there is a process to get to the promise. I now have set times to unplug to get some me time or spend quality time with my family. Family is so important to me.
Spotlight Events Houston – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Spotlight Events Houston is an event planning company that specializes in small intimate weddings and social events such as birthday parties, baby showers, etc. We specialize in bringing in thoughtful details that bring the client’s vision to life.
I am most proud of the waves we are making in the industry and the vendor relationships we have built thus far. Also, our work has been published in several publications such as Southbound Bride and Wedding Chicks. I am so grateful, humble and blessed to have the opportunity to do what I love. However, without our clients believing in our abilities and trusting us with their vision, we would be nothing. I am forever grateful.
One major thing that sets Spotlight Events Houston apart from others is that we do not overbook ourselves to ensure that we can provide the absolute best service to the clients. We never want our clients to feel like a number or that they do not have our undivided attention.
We want to have the time and energy to really understand the client’s needs and wants and execute their vision with grace. We have decided that the quality versus quantity approach is what we will live by. It is important to have time to love what we do and create unique out of the box experiences for our clients and their guest.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
As Maya Angelou stated, “Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.” It’s simple as that. If I had to define success in my own words, I would say it is based on my overall happiness and the ability to never give up. Those are the things that I have full control over. When my clients are happy and smiling that to me is success.
