Meet Candice Wheat of Comfortable Home Furnished Apartments

Today we’d like to introduce you to Candice Wheat.

Candice, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
At the age of 16, I started my first job and knew right away I would own a business one day. While my fellow classmates dreamed about being doctors and lawyers, I was dreaming about owning my own business in the hospitality industry. Growing up in a small town close to Destin Florida, I was surrounded by the hospitality industry. This included working as a massage therapist in a resort in Destin. Years later I moved to Houston, and I started my own day spa. Unfortunately, the spa failed miserably. At the time I was a single mother, so as painful as it was to lose my dream I knew I had to keep going for my son. Although my dream of owning a business was still there, I was terrified to ever risk starting a business again.

Fortunately a few years later I was able to get back in to the hospitality industry with a corporate lodging company here in Houston. I loved my job and I fell in love with the idea of temporary lodging. While working in the corporate housing industry I learned a lot and I learned there was a huge need for this type of lodging in the medical center that was being unfulfilled. There was just not enough lodging near the medical center or lodging that really accommodated the needs of medical patients. Patient lodging is completely different than corporate lodging. I worked with a lot of medical patients at the time and it was just heartbreaking that I could not help them. I knew I could do something about this though.

I will always remember how scared I was the day I realized I needed to start my own business inpatient lodging. I knew I could do it and help a lot of people but after failing the first time with a business I was truly terrified. I had a good job with benefits and a son to take care of, so how could I really risk all of that? After many sleepless nights and weighing the risk I decided to jump off the deep end and start a patient lodging company. I knew there was a need and although I was risking everything I had to try and use my knowledge of temporary lodging to help patients and their families.

After 7 years of being in business, I am proud to say that Comfortable Home Furnished Apartments is the leader in patient lodging in the Texas Medical Center. The risk I took ended in me having the most rewarding business I could ever dream of. Not only do I get to do what I love, but I am making a difference in other peoples lives for the better. Our patients are truly thankful for the service we provide and it brings me great joy knowing we are helping others.

Has it been a smooth road?
As a whole, I would say things have been pretty smooth. However, there have been some struggles we have dealt with along the way. One of the first struggles I can think of was realizing I could no longer do everything my self. After about two years my business had grown a lot and I needed help. However, hiring employees is a huge responsibility and I wanted to be sure I did things right by the employees. Not only did I have to make sure my business was successful for my own family but now I have employees counting on me to make good choices as their lively hood depends on it as well.

Learning to let go and hand the reigns over to my team to handle day to day task was another personal struggle of mine. However, as my business grew I had to grow as well and learn that I cant do it all. As the owner of this company, I needed to be free to look at the big picture and make the best decisions I could to continue to run a successful business. I am happy to say I have the best team one could ever ask for!

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I love most about Houston is our cultural diversity and innovative spirit. We are one of the most diverse cities in the country. My fellow Houstonians come from all over the world and it is a blessing to be able to live and work with people from such a variety of background. Being that the city is so diverse we have one of the most amazing food scenes in the country as well! Our beloved Houston is truly an innovative city.

From NASA to the largest medical center in the world, to the energy sector, to the WORLD CHAMPION Houston Astros! We really have it all. Lastly, what sets Houston apart from other cities is that the people have the biggest hearts as we all saw last year with hurricane Harvey and the recovery efforts. Everyone really stepped up.

After stating all of these great things about Houston, there is not much to complain about however, I do wish we had less traffic. Which is why all of Comfortable Home’s apartments are conveniently located 3 miles or less to the Texas medical center.
