Meet Candis Evans of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Candis Evans.

Hi Candis, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey in the mental health field began in 2019 when I started working at a psychiatric emergency treatment center. I didn’t realize at the time how significant that year would become, both personally and professionally. That same year, I learned that my youngest child had been diagnosed with Autism, and I experienced the devastating loss of my eldest brother, someone who was incredibly close to me.

Those experiences changed my perspective on life, grief, emotional wellness, and what it means to navigate difficult seasons. While working in a field dedicated to helping others manage their mental health, I was also learning the importance of acknowledging and caring for my own. Mental health was no longer something I understood only professionally—it became deeply personal.

During that time, I began considering returning to school for a master’s degree in counseling, although I questioned whether I could balance graduate school, work, motherhood, and life. In 2020, I found an online distance-learning program that aligned with my circumstances and vision for the future. By the end of that year, I took the leap and began my graduate journey.

Each chapter of my career has since expanded my understanding of people and the challenges they face. I transitioned from psychiatric crisis services to serving as a Case Manager for at-risk youth and later as a Conservatorship Specialist working with children and families involved in the child welfare system. Those experiences strengthened my knowledge of crisis intervention, trauma, family dynamics, behavioral challenges, and the environmental factors that influence emotional well-being.

Today, I am a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate and independent contractor, providing counseling to individuals navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, emotional dysregulation, relationship challenges, and major life transitions. My approach incorporates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, trauma-informed care, mindfulness, person-centered therapy, and solution-focused interventions.

In December 2025, I soft-launched Evolve From Within Counseling Services, a practice built around my belief that meaningful and lasting change begins within. Creating my own practice has allowed me to bring together my education, professional experience, personal journey, and passion for helping others in a way that reflects the clinician I have worked to become.

My passion for mental health and emotional wellness extends beyond my clinical work. I have self-published two books, both centered on mental health and emotional wellness, using storytelling to bring awareness to the often-unspoken challenges that can influence our emotions, behaviors, and relationships. I am also a member of the Mental Health Collective, where I remain connected to others who share a commitment to mental health awareness, advocacy, and community support.

My vision extends beyond the counseling room. I am also working toward launching the Evolve From Within Foundation, a nonprofit focused on mentoring, family support, and community resources. My hope is to strengthen families, encourage young people, and help make meaningful support more accessible within the community.

Looking back, I can see how some of the most challenging seasons of my life ultimately redirected me toward purpose. What began as a career in mental health became a personal commitment to helping others understand themselves, navigate difficult seasons, and recognize that where they are today does not have to determine where they end up.

And I’m still evolving. As I work toward full LPC licensure and continue developing Evolve From Within, one of my long-term goals is to earn a Psy.D. in Clinical or Counseling Psychology and ultimately become a licensed psychologist. I hope to expand my clinical expertise in psychological assessment, diagnosis, and evidence-based treatment, including the ability to conduct and interpret formal psychological and diagnostic evaluations.

Ultimately, I envision Evolve From Within growing beyond traditional counseling to incorporate therapy, psychological assessment, mentoring, family support, and community-based services. If this journey has taught me anything, it’s that sometimes the opportunities we question whether we’re ready for become the very opportunities that reveal what we’re capable of. I’m grateful for where I am today, and equally excited about everything that is still **evolving from within**.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been a completely smooth road, but I’ve learned to appreciate that some of the most challenging parts of the journey have also been the most transformative.

One of my biggest challenges was learning how to balance everything at once. I was pursuing graduate school while working, raising my children, being a wife, navigating personal loss, and managing the responsibilities that come with everyday life. There were many moments when I questioned whether I had enough time, energy, or even confidence to accomplish everything I had set out to do.

Grief was also a significant part of my journey. Losing my eldest brother while simultaneously learning how to advocate for and better understand the needs of my youngest child changed me in ways I could not have anticipated. I was helping others navigate their emotional wellness professionally while having to become much more intentional about managing my own.

Professionally, there were challenges as well. My career allowed me to work in several demanding environments, including psychiatric crisis services, case management with at-risk youth, and as a CPS caseworker working directly with children and families involved in the child welfare system. Prior to graduating with my master’s degree, I also had the opportunity to gain clinical experience within a private practice setting. Balancing these roles while completing graduate school was demanding, but each experience gave me a different perspective on trauma, crisis intervention, family dynamics, behavioral challenges, and the many factors that influence a person’s emotional well-being. They also taught me the importance of boundaries, resilience, compassion, and looking beyond a person’s behavior to understand what may be happening beneath the surface.

Transitioning fully into counseling and eventually entrepreneurship brought a different set of challenges. Building confidence as a clinician, working toward independent licensure, learning the business side of private practice, and developing Evolve From Within required me to become comfortable with uncertainty. I’ve had to learn that every opportunity will not be the right opportunity, every door is not meant to remain open, and sometimes progress requires being willing to experience a little discomfort in order to move forward.

So, no, the road hasn’t always been smooth—but I don’t think I would remove the difficult parts. They’ve shaped how I approach my work, my family, my faith, and myself. I’ve learned to give myself grace, trust the process, and recognize that a challenging season does not necessarily mean you’re on the wrong path. Sometimes, it is simply preparing you for the next version of yourself.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work centers on helping people better understand themselves, the experiences that have shaped them, and the patterns that may be preventing them from moving forward. As a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate and founder of Evolve From Within Counseling Services, I provide counseling to adolescents and adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, emotional dysregulation, relationship challenges, grief, and major life transitions. My therapeutic approach incorporates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, trauma-informed care, person-centered therapy, mindfulness, and solution-focused interventions.

One area I am especially passionate about is helping people look beyond the behavior they see on the surface. Whether it is anger, avoidance, people-pleasing, difficulty trusting others, or unhealthy coping patterns, I believe there is often a deeper story behind the behavior. My goal is to create a space where clients can explore that story without judgment, develop healthier coping strategies, and gain the confidence to make meaningful changes in their lives.

What sets me apart is my commitment to modeling authenticity and evolution. I don’t believe helping others requires presenting myself as someone who has always had everything figured out. I believe there is value in being genuine about the fact that we are all continually learning, healing, and becoming. Evolution requires self-awareness, accountability, and sometimes the willingness to acknowledge that what worked for one version of us may not serve the person we are becoming.

That philosophy is also the heart behind Evolve From Within. I want people to understand that change is not about becoming someone entirely different; sometimes it is about becoming more aware of who you are, challenging what no longer serves you, and intentionally developing the version of yourself you want to carry forward.

I am most proud of how my personal experiences, education, and professional background have come together to create something with a larger purpose. Building Evolve From Within Counseling Services has been incredibly meaningful, but I am equally proud of the vision I am developing for the Evolve From Within Foundation. Through the foundation, I hope to extend that mission beyond therapy by providing mentoring, family support, and community-based resources.

Ultimately, I want my work to be known for helping people feel seen beyond their circumstances or behaviors. Whether through counseling, mentoring, advocacy, or community support, I want Evolve From Within to represent a simple message: You can honor where you’ve been without believing you have to remain there.

What are your plans for the future?
My plans for the future remain centered on continued professional development and expanding the vision behind Evolve From Within. My immediate goal is to obtain full licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor while continuing to grow Evolve From Within Counseling Services and develop the Evolve From Within Foundation.

Long term, I plan to pursue a Psy.D. in Clinical or Counseling Psychology and ultimately become a licensed psychologist, expanding my expertise in advanced clinical practice, diagnosis, and psychological assessment.

I’m excited about what’s ahead and look forward to continuing to learn, serve my community, and evolve both personally and professionally.
