Today we’d like to introduce you to Carla Bisong.
Carla, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have always had a passion for the arts. I studied Finance thinking I should get a secure job, but I never forgot about my dream of owning an art gallery. Artists and creative entrepreneurs seem to have a drive and purpose that most colleagues in corporate America didn’t have.
One day I walked into a gallery to purchase a painting I saw through the window. I patiently stood in front of the painting waiting for the staff to come talk to me. No one else was in the gallery. Sadly, I was ignored. I knew that when I opened my gallery I would make everyone feel welcome.
In 2013, I opened my gallery with the help of my husband Gideon and have enjoyed the journey ever since.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If anyone tells you that starting a business is easy or smooth, please introduce me. I have yet to meet an entrepreneur that hasn’t experienced the highs and the lows. The victories one day and the thoughts of quitting the next.
My first struggle was learning how to stay in the moment and focus on the immediate task in front of me. There are so many things to do that I felt overwhelmed all the time. I was glued to my phone and laptop, I never turned it off.
My next struggle was learning to delegate. The gallery is my baby and I felt no one would care as much as I do.
Please tell us about Bisong Art Gallery.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I remember in my parents’ home as a child, my mom had a seascape painting. No matter how sad I felt, I would stare at that painting and feel at peace. I didn’t realize it until later that art could influence my emotions.
