Meet Carolyn Dee Flores

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolyn Dee Flores.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Carolyn Dee Flores loves books so much, she started writing and illustrating her own books when she was in second grade. Carolyn’s father was in the U.S. Air Force. So, her family traveled all over the world.

When Carolyn grew up, she attended Trinity University, and worked as a computer analyst turned rock musician turned children’s author/illustrator. She wrote soundtracks for television and film. But, finally, Carolyn came back to what she loved the most – writing and illustrating children’s books!

Carolyn is now working on her 11th book for children! But her favorite book, is her most recent – The Amazing Watercolor Fish/El Asombroso Pez Acuarela, because it is one of the first books in the world to rhyme in both Spanish and English! The Spanish version is by former Texas Poet Laureate Carmen Tafolla.

Please tell us about your art.
I have a studio where I create things all day! I work with watercolor, oil paints, pencils and playdoh! I am surrounded by books. My house looks like it is made out of books. It takes about two years to create all of the illustrations for a picture book.

Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
Books and ideas are the backbones of civilization. More importantly, children souls and minds are hungry for new ideas and creativity. Especially books that encourage them to create things on their own, and books that acknowledge their lives as important.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Almost all of my work ends up in books. I am doing six book launches for my upcoming book – The Amazing Watercolor Fish/El Asombroso Pez Acuarela – including one in Houston. It will be at Brazos Bookstore, 2421 Bissonnet St, on November 3, 2018 at 11:00. I will have some of the original watercolors there.
