Meet Cedric Washington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cedric Washington.

Cedric, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I began cutting hair at the age of 12 in an effort to save my mom the money that it costed to cut mine and my brother’s hair. Eventually, that grew into me cutting other kids’ hair in the apartment complexes we lived in and then others around the area. The passion to open a barber and beauty shop came during high school at North Shore Senior High School, where I had to write a business plan as a project for my business computers class. The original name was Braids and Fades (which at the time was a popular hip-hop song in Houston and a part of the social climate. After high school, upon discovering that I would soon become a father, I decided that I would find employment and temporarily shelve cutting hair, as at the time, for me, was not creating sustainability of my family’s financial needs. Some 15 years later, the opportunity to finish school arose, and upon completion, I decided that since I had created a large network over the years, that I wanted to forgo working in someone else’s shop and open my own. That was the birth of what is now known as The Cutting Edge Barber & Beauty Salon. A full-service barber and beauty salon that specializes in natural hair care services.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to eventual success didn’t come without obstacles. Within the first 3 years of business, there was Hurricane Harvey, 2 arctic freezes, and of course, the COVID PANDEMIC! Through it all, with consistent work and a lot of prayer, we were able to maintain, incorporate adequate health and safety measures and thrive once things began to subside.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a master barber of over 20 years. I specialize in fades of all kind. I pride myself in providing great quality service, in a timely and affordable capacity, in a controlled and family-friendly environment. I like for the barbershop to be an experience that someone will remember and look forward to. Engagement in conversation, mentorship, and focusing on being active within the community are a staple of what I have intended to be as a man and business owner.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love everything about Houston, the culture, the food, the sense of hospitality that typically gets lost in big cities, and the pride in which native Houstonians and Texans possess. If I had one thing to say I didn’t like, it’s the traffic! Houston is full, STOP MOVING HERE 🙂
