Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlie Roseland.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Charlie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In 2014, my business partner Andrew and I made the decision to buy a company. We didn’t know what kind of business it would be, but we knew in order to get to where we wanted in life, it was time to put our effort and money into our own business.
Andrew and I have known each other since freshman year of college at UT in Austin. We also went to Rice’s MBA School together, and by the end of school, we knew the entrepreneurial path was for us. Andrew and I and some of our other classmates had evaluated several startup ideas prior to 2014, but for one reason or another, it never materialized. In early 2014 we decided buying a business was a better option for us, and after about 6 months, we landed on Metallurgical Supply Company (“Metsuco”).
Fast forward 12 months, and our other investor came to us with an opportunity to buy into a property management company he owned called Advantage Asset Management (“AAM”). He needed help turning that company around and felt Andrew and I were up to the task. So now Andrew and I own 2 very different businesses with completely different focuses and challenges. We’re nowhere close to where we want to be, but we feel the foundation is there to really start to take off.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Challenges? Absolutely. Many times we have had to completely change our mindset and focus and refocus ourselves and the team in order to make sure we are heading the right direction. Changing industry conditions certainly played a big part in that. Getting the right people in place to make sure we were set for growth was another big part. Our struggles finding the right folks really made us appreciate how valuable good employees are. It can take a lot of time and searching, but it is well worth it once you find the right fit.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Metallurgical Supply Company and Advantage Asset Management – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Metsuco is a distributor of industrial equipment and supplies used mostly to test metals and other materials. Our clients operate in various manufacturing facilities, specialized labs, and universities even. Our customer base is worldwide, and our products can be used in several industries, part of what made the company so appealing initially. We pride ourselves in our ability to quickly and cost effectively source products for our clients. We’re also working on bringing modern technology to a very traditional operation. Working with marketing automation, search engine optimization, and more integrated software systems.
AAM is a property management company responsible for managing over 100 single family homes, a handful of commercial properties, and two apartment complexes. Most properties are located in the North Houston to Conroe areas. Property management is all about helping the property owner maximize his/her investment return. To this effect, we are proud of our ability to quickly get quality tenants in place and to offer cost-effective services to the tenants and owners. I put our response time to owner and tenant concerns amongst the best of property management companies.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Both companies are on growth paths. We’re working to put a lot of things in place to ensure we can handle the growth and also to make sure we can take both companies to the next level. We’re a long way from where we know these companies can be, but it’s exciting seeing the successes along the way.
