Today we’d like to introduce you to Chau Nguyen and Jennifer My Ellickal.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Chau and Jennifer. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
We became certified in August 2017 through Nurture Soul Therapeutics’ Integrative Yoga Therapy Teacher Training. This program inspired our passion for holistic health and healing of the mind, body, and soul. We strongly believe self-care education, therapeutic yoga, and meditation are imperative for optimal health and well-being.
There is a substantial need in making yoga and self-care education accessible to a wider range of people and settings. We wanted to create modifications for individual’s limitations whether it’s performed on a mat, at a hospital, or in a wheelchair. We believe in the therapeutic benefits of yoga and that it truly is for everyone.
In April 2018, we manifested and created Team Self Care to carry out our vision to advocate for self-care education and accessible yoga. Today, we operate to meet the needs of busy individuals and groups, traveling and providing services on site and by appointment to local schools, businesses and organizations throughout Houston.
Our ultimate goal is to ignite a movement and bring accessibility and awareness to the value of self-care practices and education.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Self-care can be an ambiguous concept, and it’s meaning is different for everyone. There is a misconception that self-care is only about treating yourself and visiting a luxurious spa; however, self-care is something we can all access inside of ourselves.
It’s also difficult to convey the idea that self-care is NOT selfish. While it’s wonderful to care for others, we believe we must first take care of ourselves physically, mentally, and spiritually. A healthy body and mind are needed in order to function and to be of service to others. Life’s demands make it nearly impossible to prioritize self-care.
There’s a lack of awareness that one’s health and well-being may decline by not having a daily self-care ritual. Despite these challenges, we believe wholeheartedly in our mission to continue educating on and advocating for healthy, consistent, and sustainable self-care practices.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Team Self Care – what should we know?
At the center of our city’s self-care movement is Houston’s first, woman-led duo dedicated to increasing awareness and advocacy for self-care education and accessible yoga. Team Self Care, LLC is managed by co-founders, Chau Nguyen, and Jennifer My Ellickal.
Chau is a registered and licensed Occupational Therapist who holds certifications in holistic health coaching and therapeutic yoga. Jennifer has a background in finance and accounting and is also a certified integrative yoga therapy teacher.
Team Self Care is a traveling yoga and wellness company which specializes in offering educational workshops with self-care themed yoga and mindfulness classes. Our unique model allows us to help meet health and wellness goals that are customized, accessible, and convenient for our clients.
Our proudest moments have been the positive feedback from first-time clients who were previously intimidated to try yoga and meditation; we have also helped clients discover other avenues to support their health and self-care journey through our coaching sessions and workshops.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Authenticity. Of course, we put in the work to practice what we preach, but we will never claim to be perfect. These days we all feel perpetual pressure to be everything and to have everything; it’s refreshing to know ALL humans are flawed.
The idea of “perfect” isn’t attainable nor relatable. We are on our own journey, just like everyone else trying to navigate life. Team Self Care is about community, being a team that supports each other through the self-care journey. We believe in progress over perfection, and that self-care starts with celebrating all the small victories.
Trying to be a masterpiece prevents you from actually mastering peace. Seeking perfection is a losing battle, success for us is always being authentic, making real and genuine connections, and inspiring others in the pursuit to find their true selves.
