Meet Chelsea Grittman of Monarch Hair Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Grittman.

Chelsea, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I was 17, I decided to leave high school early, get my GED, and start on my career path. I’m not the typical hairstylist that always grew up wanting to do hair. Instead, I went on a journey of becoming a makeup artist and fell in love with doing hair.

I attended Regency Beauty Institute in Pasadena and graduated in December 2009. I then began my story, working at different salons and gathering as much knowledge as possible from all of the wonderful people I worked for. Now, at 27, I have been running my own business going on four years, and I could not be happier.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It was a bumpy road from the beginning! I dealt with health problems in school, taking off a few months for surgery. Once I was licensed it was tough finding a salon where I enjoyed working, I worked at corporate salons as well as “mom and pop” shops, and couldn’t quite find anywhere I was truly happy.

I even took a break and went back to school thinking I didn’t want to be a stylist anymore. It wasn’t until then that I realized that hair was my true passion, and anywhere I could work was a learning experience to make me the best stylist I could be.

Once I got back into a salon, it was a whole other struggle trying to catch up on all of the techniques and skills I had missed being out for so long. I have even continued to struggle through running my own business, learning the ropes and trying to be as successful as possible. It hasn’t always been easy, but it has been worth it!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Monarch Hair Studio story. Tell us more about the business.
Monarch Hair Studio is a small business, fully operated by myself. I am a hair color specialist, mainly known for blonding and balayage, as well as large transformations and color corrections. I also offer vivid hair coloring, tape in extensions — haircutting and styling on top of all other color services.

I completely personalize each person’s experience, answering all questions about services, thorough consultations, as well as mini-lessons for styling at home to get the most knowledge out of every appointment. I like to make sure that each client has a great experience from the moment they contact me to the end of their appointment.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t feel like luck has played a part in my life or business at all. With determination, setting goals, and the right support, you can make it to where you want to be no matter the good or bad that happens along the way.
