Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Maier.
Hi Chelsea, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
My passion for fitness began my freshman year at high school. I never really considered myself to be an athlete while growing up; that is, until I got to high school. A friend of mine wanted to do a spontaneous sport that no other females would think about doing and I was all for it. So, we chose to do powerlifting. I immediately fell in love. Aside from powerlifting, I was also in tennis. Both extremely competitive sports. But for whatever reason, I stuck with powerlifting the most. All throughout high school, I competed and made it to Regionals every single year.. all except my senior year. The year that mattered the MOST to me. Why? I found out right after powerlifting season started, I was pregnant. At the time, lifting while pregnant was not an option and my coach took me off the team but allowed me to help coach the other girls. Becoming pregnant shifted my dreams and goals in a major way but I was still determined to get back to it all. However, after my daughter was born, I took a break from my dreams.
It’s funny. They always say.. “Graduate, go to college, get married, and THEN have kids.” Well, not me. Let me just give you a glimpse of my timeline..
I graduated high school in 2009, had my first born in August 2009, my second born in June of 2010, went to college in January 2011, and had my third child in December 2012.
After getting accepted into Lamar University, I was determined to find a program fit for my dreams. I honestly changed my emphasis area four times until I finally found one that stuck. In 2014, a friend of mine, whom I competed with in high school powerlifting, set out to open a powerlifting team at Lamar University and was successful in doing so. This was EXACTLY what I needed to get myself back on track. I joined the powerlifting team and quickly began to leave my mark. From first place medals, to regionals, nationals, and even breaking Texas deadlift records.. it all came back.
Having kids and being a single mom was honestly the driving force that I needed. I graduated Lamar University with a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and Fitness Management with a minor in Kinesiology and an emphasis on Strength and Conditioning. After college, I stayed connected with the team and even became their coach for a semester.
I’m from a small town in southeast Texas where a majority of folks don’t make it out unless it involves sports. In my opinion, the small town mentality is conditioned to stay and make a life there.. follow family tradition and stay close to home/family. I was just not built that way nor was I raised like that. I knew I had to get out.. so I worked hard, 24/7, 365, to ensure that I did. And that is how I landed up out here in Houston’s outskirts.
April 2019 is when I began calling Richmond, Texas my home. I spent that whole year getting acclimated and then, bam. Covid hit.. and it was the best thing that could have ever happened at that time. I spent the majority of that time at the drawing board.. thinking of what I can do to make those dreams of mine come true.. and then one day.. I DID.
In August of 2020, I became a business owner to Bawdy.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road at all. I went through the typical struggles of the single mom life.. and that’s just putting it lightly. I was told no more times than I could count. I was and still am being denied for jobs that I qualify for. I’ve been so down that the only way to go was up. I’ve been so broke that I’d give up my meal just to ensure my kids were fed. Living paycheck to paycheck was not for me.
Coming out to Houston has been life-changing in all aspects of my and my kid’s life.
And becoming a business owner is proof that I can make my dreams come true and fight for it every step of the way.. just like I fought to have a better life. Just like I fought to get out of Beaumont, Texas. Just like I fought to ensure my kids had what they needed.
They say God gives His toughest battles to His strongest soldiers. If that’s the case, I’m going to keep on fighting. If I can get through 12 tough years, I can get however many more with even more accomplishments.
As you know, we’re big fans of Bawdy. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Bawdy was formed in August 2020. Bawdy began with fitness wear and specific fitness equipment and, in January of 2021, branched out to having its own fitness app which is capable of analyzing and creating fitness plans that will help clients reach and maximize their goals.
I am known for and specialize in strength training and glute building, however, I am capable of more, such as weight loss and weight gain.
My number one and top selling program is the Bawdy Booty Building Program designed specifically to target glutes and sculpt those curves.
Brand wise, I am most proud of the time and effort I put in while creating my brand name and logo. It captures a lot of attention receives a plethora of good feedback. Aside from that, I am also mostly proud of my apparel and equipment. To spotlight, my Bawdy Resistance Bands aka “Booty Bands” are custom made like no others. The inner grip strips and thick width means they will never roll or slip. Plus they are durable and have an extra stretch which means they will not break.
What makes you happy?
My kids make me happy! It sounds redundant but the single mom life is HARD! But I honestly would not have had it any other way. The lessons from it all have made me the woman and mom I am today.
And of course, health and fitness makes me happy. It’s just embedded in me and forever will be.
