Meet Chelsea Ryan McCurdy and Rachael Logue of Rogue Productions HTX in Central Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Ryan McCurdy and Rachael Logue.

Chelsea Ryan and Rachael, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Rachael, brought a script to me called Matt and Ben by Mindy Kaling and Brenda Withers. We thought it would be a fun project, so we looked for a company to help us produce it. We ended up having a hard time finding someone to help us produce it, so we just looked at one another and realized that we could make a difference in the Houston theatre scene and decided to produce it ourselves. We created a theatre company from the ground up and decided that we would begin with these two women show realizing that if it all fell apart, it would be on us, and no one would be harmed. To our surprise, people enjoyed the show, and believed in us and the trajectory we were on. We want to create art that reflects Houston and provides equal opportunity and fair wages to artists here in town. So far, we have been able to meet the expectations we have set upon ourselves. We hope to continue this journey and bring Houston along with us.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a challenging road. After the success of Matt and Ben, we planned to produce a musical called “I Love You Because”. We held auditions and were about to go into rehearsals when Hurricane Harvey hit. The theatre we were going to use was closed indefinitely due to storm damage which postponed the show. We felt like it may be a hit we couldn’t come back from, but we have pressed on and are producing our second show called “Touched” by Bess Wohl. We think this will put us back on the map as a company, and we plan to mount that musical later this year.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Rogue Productions HTX – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Rogue Productions HTX is a Houston based theatre company that focuses bringing accessible theatrical experiences that represent the diverse population of our city. we aim to tell stories to which all Houstonians can relate, and we wish to support the artistic economy of Houston by offering competitive compensation for the artists we employ. As a company, we are most proud of the pieces we have chosen thus far. Our first piece was an all-female cast of women playing men and the commentary that creates, our second piece we produced was a reading with the 50 Playwrights Project of “Just Like Us” by Karen Zacarias who gave producers of the play rights to it for free after President Trump announced the plan to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. Our next project is “Touch(ed)” by Bess Wohl, which touches on mental health and the relationships of those affected by it. We strive to give a voice and a place to those overlooked or not heard. What sets us apart as a company, besides being a woman owned business with both owners being 30 years old or younger, is our commitment to being socially conscious as well as the high production value of our projects.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We don’t have any big changes on the horizon, we only plan to continue doing good work and working hard for those we employ. We look forward to producing at least two shows a year and offering performance and design opportunities to the incredible talent pool Houston has to offer. We look forward to our upcoming show in February and mounting a musical later this year!
