Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheree Jenkins.
Hi Cheree, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my first business as an event planner in 2008. It was a small wedding, but it meant soo much to me. That small wedding begun a huge business venture that has been thriving for more than ten years now. I would do all the family birthday parties and social events to gain clients. I just love to throw parties and to see the reaction of my clients when I reveal their dreams as a reality. I get so much joy when I’m preparing an event. I would love to show you guys my portfolio, I guaranteed you will feel the joy and excitements each client experienced at their event.
Another business that I have is my own dance company. I have been dancing since I was six years old. I was a member of current Houstonian Calvin Murphy band “Marching Thunder.” I learned so much being apart of that organization, all the way to the point to where I wanted to open my own dance studio. My dance company is named Divas In Motion Dance Studio and Fitness Center. We offer all genres of dance and we accept all level dancers from the age of 3-19 years of age. We also have fitness classes for the kids and adults. Divas In Motion has been running for seven years strong now. We have competed on the hit national show on Life Time “Bring It” against the Dancing Dolls, coach Dianna Williams. Dancing is one of my true passions I have, the best things is the fact that I can teach dance and inspire a young lady. I have a deep calling to help the youth to become the best version of themselves, and I will do everything in my power to see as many girls become great leaders of tomorrow.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For both of my business, their has been a lot of good days, and a lot more bad days. As an event planner, its hard sometimes to stay afloat of the competition, especially when there are billion of other event planners doing the same. Challenges seems to arise the most during peek season, but I never gave up, I did what I had to do and rose above the occasion. For Divas In Motion, challenges appears to arise everyday. If its not trying to fund a dancer, than is less fortuned, or keeping the studio bill paid. There was times where I had to make serious choices like closing the studio for three months to help catch up on bills, that was one of the hardest things I had to do as a Director/Coach. I can honestly say that this really jump-started a fresh beginning for Divas In Motion and by the grace of God, we have been going strong for both of my businesses.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My profession is a Cost Accountant. I have been working in accounting for about 17 years now. It all started in the VOE program at Chavez High School. I was blessed to be caught up with my hours in school, so I was granted the opportunity to work for the two half of the school day. My first job in accounting was a Accounts Payable Clerk at Lyondell Basel Chemical Plant. I worked there for about six years, then I moved to BHP as the same role. Lyondell loved me so much after five years BHP. They call me back to work for Lyondell as a Cost Analyst. I worked there for another four years and loved every moment. Not knowing the best was yet to come, I was approached with the opportunity to have a 6 figure job as a Cost Accountant!! I couldn’t believe it because I didn’t apply for the position, God truly blessed me.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
As a kid, I was always seeking a adventure!! There was never a dull moment when Cheree is around. I was always apart of some type of organization. I was apart of Girl Scouts of America, Student Council, Spelling Bee Club, Photo Club, Home Decor Club, Track and Field, Dance Club, Band, and many more. I was a very active young lady. Every club or organization I was apart of, I can honestly say, is part of my personality.
