Meet Chris Kim of Era Homes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Kim.

Hi Chris, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I didn’t initially set out to become a home builder. After graduating from UT Austin, I built a career in finance and corporate development, where I learned how to evaluate risk, manage complex projects, and think long-term. While that experience was invaluable, I found myself wanting to build something more personal and tangible.

In 2018, I stepped into real estate full time, drawn by the opportunity to shape communities in a meaningful way. Over time, my wife Esther and I combined our complementary skill sets — my operational background and her design expertise — to create Era Homes. Today, we focus on developing homes that are thoughtfully designed, well-built, and intentional. We believe a home should be both functional and welcoming — a place where families create memories and communities grow stronger.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. Transitioning from corporate America into full-time real estate meant stepping away from predictability and into a field where outcomes aren’t guaranteed. In development, there are always variables — construction costs, financing, permitting, and shifting market conditions — and you’re often required to make thoughtful decisions without having perfect information.

The COVID years were particularly challenging. Like many in our industry, we faced skyrocketing lumber and material prices, supply chain disruptions, and delays caused by mandated shutdowns. At the same time, there were concerns around health. Navigating that season required constant reassessment — protecting our team, supporting our trade partners, and making disciplined financial decisions in an environment that changed week to week.

Through that complexity, maintaining our core ideals — building to a high standard of quality and keeping the customer at the center of every decision — helped us stay grounded and maintain direction. Those experiences reinforced the importance of patience, strong relationships, and building with excellence, both operationally and financially. Ultimately, the challenges didn’t deter us; they refined how we operate and strengthened our commitment to building intentionally rather than reactively.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Era Homes is a family-led residential development company focused on building thoughtfully designed homes that balance quality, functionality, and long-term value. We specialize in developing well-crafted homes in neighborhoods where design, livability, and community matter just as much as square footage.

What sets us apart is the combination of disciplined execution and intentional design. My background in finance and project management allows us to approach each project with careful planning, cost control, and long-term thinking. Esther brings a strong design sensibility and a deep understanding of how families actually live in a space. Every floor plan, finish, and layout decision is made with real-life functionality in mind — not just aesthetics.

We’re known for being deliberate. We don’t chase trends for the sake of it, and we don’t build simply to maximize density. We build homes we would be proud for our own family to live in — spaces that feel welcoming, durable, and thoughtfully considered.

Brand-wise, what we’re most proud of is consistency. Consistency in quality. Consistency in how we treat our trade partners and customers. In an industry where shortcuts can be tempting, we’ve committed to building the right way — even when it requires more patience.

What we want readers to know is that we’re not just constructing houses; we’re contributing to neighborhoods. Our goal is to create homes that add value to the community and stand the test of time.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The most important characteristic has been steadiness. There are always variables in development — market shifts, supply constraints, timing pressures — and the ability to stay calm, think clearly, and stick to your principles matters more than reacting quickly.

For us, maintaining our commitment to quality and putting the customer first, even when circumstances are complex, has helped guide our decisions. Success hasn’t come from chasing momentum; it’s come from staying disciplined and consistent over time.
