Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Pramudji, MD.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dr. Pramudji. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have wanted to be a physician as long as I can remember. It was always my goal throughout my education. Even when I studied Chemical Engineering at Georgia Tech, the plan remained to go to medical school.
Once I got to medical school, I felt like I was in heaven. I loved every minute of it. In gross anatomy, I was drawn to surgery and decided to do something where I could use my hands in addition to my brain. I have a slight artistic bent. I won a Blue Ribbon at the Texas State Fair as a child for some artwork that I submitted. I also spent my free time on needlework and quilting.
Once I decided on surgery, the next step was to decide which field in surgery was best for me. I initially thought gynecologic oncology would be the way for me to go, but when I did a rotation on urology, I loved it. I loved the combination of surgery and medicine and the great technology in urology. I never thought as a child that I would be a urologist! But I am so glad I had the exposure to it in medical school because it has been a great fit for me.
Urology requires many years of training. I came to Houston for my six-year residency training. When I finished I had a great job with a group in Houston and was the first and only woman in the group for 12 years. It was a good experience, but I began to realize that there was a great need for a urology office that catered specifically to women.
My practice had become all female-focused and I received further board certification in female urology. Thus it was natural in 2014 when I launched Houston Female Urology, the first urology office in Texas for women only. It was a big success from the beginning because I had a winning formula, a strong reputation in the community and a great team with me. Women come from other states to seek out female-focused urological care. It’s a lot of fun and we continue to improve our care and treatment options for patients.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I planned out the transition to solo medical practice for many years before I began Houston Female Urology, so I was very prepared and it was a smooth transition. There have been occasional ups and downs. Separating from my old group initially was challenging because while they all were verbally supportive to me when it came down to it, they were less willing to let me out easily.
Also, the corporation that ran the group was difficult to negotiate with because they would not answer letters or emails for months on end. Finally, I left and it all worked out. We are still cordial and friendly.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Houston Female Urology story. Tell us more about the business.
My practice is called Houston Female Urology. I specialize in not only urology for women but also urogynecology. I do a lot of incontinence work as well as reconstruction. I have extensive experience in these fields and have excellent outcomes. I treat cystoceles, rectoceles, urinary tract infections, and overactive bladder. I do minor procedures in my office and offer general anesthetic if needed since this is a difficult area for some people. I also do vaginal rejuvenation.
We also have the most extensive menu of nonsurgical urogynecological treatments available, including the EMSella, Thermiva, MonaLisa Touch, and platelet-rich plasma.
I am very proud of the team that I have put together. Every single day without fails a patient will tell me that this is the very best doctor office that they have ever been to. My team and I provide very compassionate, professional medical care with amazing customer service.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I have been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work and train with incredible urologists in my residency and in private practice. While I was training at Baylor one of the world’s preeminent female urologists joined the teaching staff and I learned so much from him that I felt a fellowship would be redundant.
I also worked with the first urologist in Houston to do the TVT sling and learned a great deal from him.
