Meet Christopher Trevino and Philomena Jaquay of Kutz and Styles in Pearland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Trevino and Philomena Jaquay.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Christopher and Philomena. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up as a third-generation hair stylist, I was immersed in the industry from birth! I am the oldest of 3 siblings and my family would always say “Chris will never meet a stranger”. This is true because I am such an extrovert.

My grandmother and mother were hairdressers, who loved hair! As I grew into my adolescence, I knew that I wanted to pursue a career where I could help people! I started off in retail then went into dispatching for an ambulance company and started training to be an EMT.

I have always had an eye for fashion and makeup! So, I decided to switch careers and attended Remington College in Clear Lake! While in school, I had gotten an offer from a very prestigious company (Empire Faces). They are a mobile company that does hair and makeup for weddings.

During my cosmetology training, I was working a full-time job plus doing gigs for Empire Faces! The owner who has high profile clients took me under her wing and mentored me in the fashion and makeup business. I got to assist on magazine photo shoots, fashion shows, and the annual Couture for a cause show! We won the award on Wedding Wire two years in a row! When I finished cosmetology school and got my operator license, I was able to do chemical services and hair color! Empire Faces gave me a great recommendation to Kutz and Styles. I have been there ever since! After three years working at Kutz and Styles…I thought, “is this it”. Thankfully, the owners at Kutz and Styles gives me the freedom to grow within my industry. Not only am I the lead stylist/General Manager at Kutz and Styles, I am also an advisor for a very reputable color company Joico which is scientifically proven to reconstruct the hair as it colors. When I am not at the salon, I am traveling doing hair shows. I assist world renowned celebrity artists at these shows. I am on my way…

Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest adversities I have faced would have to be balance in my life! You have to have separation from work and family in order to make time for your loved ones! I’m a workaholic and never consider my job as work! There’s an old saying, “if you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work!” So I worked 7 days a week for almost a year.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Kutz and Styles story. Tell us more about the business.
Kutz and Styles is a full service Joico color salon, we offer a wide variety of services from traditional highlights and Grey Coverage to the new trendy Balayage services. I am the General Manger and I specialize in Blonding, Color Corrections and extensions!! What sets me apart from others is I also work directly with my color company as an advisor. I teach classes and work on stage as a platform artist and shadow celebrity hairdressers and learn the tips and tricks of the industry! I strive to learn something new every time I’m out teaching or at a convention. I want to elevate my craft to the highest level and keep learning and being inspired by other muses in our industry I’m always learning!

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
