Today we’d like to introduce you to Ciera Dervin.
Ciera, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am actually a hairstylist, new to the Houston area from the DFW area. I don’t have one of those stories about doing hair since I was six etc. lol. I actually played with hair a little after graduating high school in 2009, which I then went on to attend University of Houston. I moved back to DFW 2010& worked call center jobs and different part times to stay afloat. Then in 2016 after being tired of jumping from job to job, I knew I had a vision and enrolled in cosmetology school. I graduated and first started with bundles. As I’m taking all these steps I’m also working out & living a healthier lifestyle. I was using other companies fitness products and decided to take that start my own fitness line…. and here we are. I’ve moved to Houston and opened my own salon/storefront.
Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing worth having is easy! Being a business owner looks easier than it is, most definitely worth it though. You have to keep customers happy, make your presence known, control inventory, avoid scammers and a list of other things! Basically make it all make sense, pay your bills and not look stressed out.! Lol. I look for the positive in all situations, good or bad it has led me here where I am and it’s only up from here, I’m grateful for every bump in the road I’ve ran over and the ones I will continue to drive right on over.

Most people relate me personally as the owner because I do make myself transparent with my fitness journey as well as provide help with those looking. To lose weight and keep it off. Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think Houston is a GREAT place for black entrepreneurs. For a small business starting here in Houston, I would advise them to be very knowledgeable in their field and be prepared! The people here, in my experience are supportive and willing to spend money on a good product and/or service.
