Today we’d like to introduce you to CoKain.
CoKain, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am just a big ol’ bottle of artist fun! I feel like when I was created, God decided to give me all the art so I would never get bored. I’m so grateful for that. I draw, paint, sew, act, do voices, dance, write poetry and songs. I am a licensed cosmetologist, and the love of my life is singing. I grew up an only child and spent a lot of time entertaining myself. My gifts kept me occupied. Singing was the one thing I could do while I was doing anything else, and I sang ALL THE TIME! I sang because I could, because it gave me joy, I would sing without even realizing I was doing it lol. It’s as natural to me as walking, eating, or living. As a little girl, I performed in talent shows, was the lead vocalist in the high school choir, and eventually wound up recording my music in the studio and performing in various venues nationally. One move led to another and so on. Today, I perform anywhere I can; anywhere I’m needed. I know my gifts are to be shared. It’s how I help bring healing to the world. I’m a vessel. I’ve been through a lot in my life and survived a lot so that I can walk in my purpose, and that’s what I do every day.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I lost my mother as a small child. I was abandoned, my father. I’ve survived molestation and rape. I’ve kept the faith through depression and self-doubt. I’ve learned to be strong in moments and circumstances that could’ve weakened me.
Please tell us about your work.
As a singer and songwriter, what separates me from others is simply that I’m myself. I believe everyone is an individual, and I walk in my individuality. I go with my gut artistically. I flow, and I don’t worry about it. Even if something about me reminds you of someone else, there is still ONLY one me.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me, is setting a goal and doing the work to see it through to completion.
