Today we’d like to introduce you to Colby Flack.
Colby, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I went to Cy-Fair High School in Cypress, TX. I started working when I was about fifteen over the summers doing manual labor; this taught me a bit. After graduating high school and working odd jobs here and there, I studied to be a commercial diver at The Ocean Corporation in Houston, TX. I worked in the oilfield for several years and decided to leave the business when work started to slow down and found myself searching for a job.
Of course, searched and found several manual labor jobs, but nothing quite fit my personality. On a whim, decided to apply at a self-storage company and got the job! I have been in this career for about three years and truly enjoy my interaction with customers. People aren’t always happy about moving as it’s one of the most stressful things we do in our lives, and I like to be there when my customers need me.
This profession wasn’t a likely spot for me to wind up, considering my previous experience, but I sure am glad I took the leap. This business can be challenging at times, but the reward is well worth the work!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I don’t know if I’ve ever gotten advice from a successful person that didn’t first tell me how many times they failed. Struggles are a part of the business of life, and getting through difficult situations, personally or professionally, can be very difficult, but always necessary. I have a strong faith in mankind and believe with hard work, great things can be achieved. I saw this type of dedication and hard through my customers during Hurricane Harvey. These hard-working folks showed heart, and the little bit of help that Lakewood could contribute, we were more than happy to do. Houston Strong, come hell or high water, was our saying for a few weeks. I’m extremely proud of the people in these neighborhoods. They’re about as tough as they come, and compassion to boot.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
There are so many people that played credit in making Lakewood what it is. All the previous managers that have come, and made my job easier. Everyone that’s ever been extra hard on me, and others in our organization to make sure we supply supreme customer service. Those are the people that deserve the credit, sometimes we overlook or dismiss the over-intrusive parent or on-looker, who may annoy or bother us. These people are the those who will sharpen our skills to make us better customer service individuals and more importantly better people.
