Today we’d like to introduce you to Colin Mackie.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My journey with JAB was a few years in the making. I have known Andrew Ramsay – CEO for several years as a friend and we had talked over those years about me joining Andy and partnering with him to expand JAB into the US market. Having worked for one of the largest private Recruitment companies for 15 years and assisting with another smaller start-up company I had a very clear idea of the business I wanted to build and the environment I wanted to create for my future employees.
In early 2017 all the stars aligned and I started the process of putting my 17 years of experience in recruitment, particular in the Oil and Gas industry, as well as ensuring that I was in a position to create something that would provide rapid yet sustainable growth all the while staying true to the values of JAB that have ultimately provided a fantastic working environment for my staff.
The first year in any business is typically one of the hardest, that was indeed the case with JAB however with a very robust business plan and long hard days the business started to turn profits very quickly, I believe this was due to JAB offering a level of customer care that, in my opinion, has left our industry with the introduction of mass technologies, not that we don’t utilize technology but as a Recruitment company I want us to talk to people as much as possible as this better establishes trust in building relationships.
Year two is well underway and we continue to grow and expand our portfolio and will be opening our 4th office in the USA in early August.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been super smooth but that’s part of the fun. The main challenge was getting the right people in at the right time. I have an unwavering belief in what we are trying to achieve and how we would do it, thankfully this paid huge dividends for us in the immediate roll out of JAB.
The challenge was then to replicate this model with more clients which required more employees to work with me and for those employees to buy into what I am trying to achieve, this has not always worked out as the structure and environment I have created is not for everyone.
Everyone who joins JAB should want my job and I promote that every day, the folks that joined me in the first year are in at the ground level and are the drivers of the business, I hope they will be with JAB for many years to come.
Please tell us about JAB Recruitment.
JAB is a Recruitment Company, We predominantly recruit in the Oil and Gas industry. JAB is known for exceptional customer care with both candidates and clients.
What sets us apart is that we are available 24/7 and we will first try and talk to our candidates and clients before sending emails. This has come as a surprise to many, especially our candidates as in some instances they are sending resumes to hundreds of sites and recruitment companies with no response, even if we are unable to place them we will have a conversation with the individual to advice them of anything they can do to improve their chances of future employment with JAB or indeed any other employer.
My proudest moments come when people reach out to us and thank us for engaging with them and my staff sees those successes resulting in placements. These successes are now helping us to move into other industry sectors, mainly through client recommendations.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I was opening the doors for the first time tomorrow I would probably hire a little faster than I did so I could roll out our services quicker, looking back to the near-immediate success I had if id employed folks sooner I believe we could have got to our first financial milestone a couple of months sooner than we did.
