Meet Ann Garcia of Com for Care Assisted Living in Bellaire

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ann Garcia.

Ann, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I came to the US 11 years ago with nothing but a dream. A dream to live better and to help serve others through my profession. Today I am living my dream. Before I acquired Com For Care Assisted Living in September of 2018, I had worked in it as a registered nurse for about four years. There was never a day when it felt like work to me. Taking care of my patients was a source of joy and satisfaction. I told myself, this has got to be my calling. I could not imagine doing anything else.

At the time, the owner of Com For Care then, Peggy McCall, took notice of my enthusiasm and dedication to senior care. She offered me the business when she was about to retire, confident that I could carry on her life’s work. She said I represented what Com For Care was all about and that she saw a striking potential in me.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
“The road to success is not as easy as we thought. We will encounter different paths that will test our patience and will to achieve our goals. The paths are smooth but mostly rough.” This is my experience. Before I started Com for Care Assisted Living I bought a property with the determination of turning it into a licensed facility for senior care. A lot of factors had to be considered before buying a property for the purpose of getting it licensed as an Assisted Living, yet those I knew little about, the only thing I had at that time was the perseverance and strong passion for the goal but it wasn’t enough..and take full responsibility for it.

It was too late I had already closed on the property. “I had no choice but to move on with it. When I found out that HOA( home owners association) had a big impact on my plan to start this business everything went south. The property I bought turned into a nightmare and all problems arose, mainly financial, emotional and significantly marital issue. I had to give up and let go. Not knowing one door has closed but four others were about to open.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Com for Care Assisted Living – what should we know?
COM FOR CARE Assisted Living is a network of four residential care homes located in the Bellaire, Texas area. Established in 1991, we provide excellence in care, loving attention and support for seniors who are no longer able to live alone. We also offer complex care for the frail elderly, aged, or disabled. As an alternative to the institutional environment of a nursing home, we protect the dignity, individuality and privacy of each of our residents while striving to support and maintain their independence with the highest quality of life.

At COM FOR CARE, our residents truly become a part of our family. Our caring, well-trained staff who have been with us for 10-20 years, with little to none turn-over, provides compassionate, gentle care designed to meet the resident’s individual needs on a one-to-one basis. Our RN’s have advanced levels of nursing degrees with the Directors of the facilities having many years of nursing experience. Our ability to respond to various levels of care, combined with our ability to manage the more complex resident, sets us apart from other care homes. A variety of supportive care services are available within the system; nursing staff is available 24 hours a day.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I have taken care of patients with different needs, but senior care has always been close to my heart. Even now when I own and manage 4 Com For Care homes, and still work for a big hospital in the Houston Medical Center at least four times a month, I would still take the time to do bedside nursing at Com For Care at least once a week. It just keeps me going. Plus, I get to work with like-minded caregivers who share my passion in providing the best quality care possible for our residents. These caregivers have been with Com For Care for years and were my colleagues from the start. They are like family for keeps.

My journey towards achieving my goals has been and will continue to be so much easier and more fulfilling because of people who inspire me to be better. These are people who believe in me, people I emulate, people I serve with and people I care for.
