Meet Terrance “TK” Koontz of Community Alive, The Sausage and Boudin Shack

Today we’d like to introduce you to Terrance “TK” Koontz.

Terrance, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In 2010 I was arrested for driving while intoxicated and evading arrest. The following year I plead guilty to both charges, mostly because I did not want to gamble with my life and end up going to jail. This incident was the catalyst for my career. I walked away with a felony and a misdemeanor and subsequently lost my home, jobs, and in many circles respect.

I moved back into my mother’s home at the age of 27. I had become a “statistic”. There were countless days filled with stress and negative emotions but I decided to use service as a way to mitigate my stress. I began to volunteer any and everywhere I could. Volunteerism lead me into a career as a community organizer, which eventually lead me to Texas Organizing Project. While at TOP, I was fortunate enough to play a role in the election of Brian Middleton the first African American D.A. in Fort Bend County history. Which to me is probably the highlight of my career. While rebuilding my life, I met Lakeisha Randle, who is now my wife. She was a local business owner, actress, and community leader. I started working with her and her family at their restaurant, The Shack. Things are slowly coming back together.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This journey has been a beautiful struggle. God is good! In spite of being denied jobs, housing, and other opportunities due to my background, I persist. I am determined not to give up. I have met so many people that share my experience and I know that my life gives hope to others in my situation, you can bounce back. I have been able to share resources and information with people who otherwise may not have access. All things are working for my good!
