Today we’d like to introduce you to Corey Beth Mullins.
Corey Beth, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I painted my first mural in 2011 and I was immediately hooked on large scale painting. I continued to create fine art and pursue solo and group exhibitions in the greater Houston area, as well as commissions and murals until 2015. In the fall of 2015, I began working with Enhanced Space, a mural and design company based out of Austin, Texas. I eventually became their Lead Artist. I traveled all over Texas painting interior and exterior murals for many model homes, apartment complexes, various businesses, and residential clients. I traveled almost constantly for many months and I absolutely loved it! Some of our projects even included textiles and art installations. I worked with Enhanced Space until Spring 2018, when I settled in Houston with my fiancé. I decided to branch out on my own and really concentrate on building business and clientele in Houston. At that point, I began to focus on Corey Beth Studios as more of a mural business. I’ve operated as Corey Beth Studios creating custom art since 2012, but now, I am focussing more on the large scale paintings, art installations, and resin art. I decided to rebrand my business in 2018 with the help of Regex SEO. My new website was launched in Feb. 2019. I decided a long time ago that I was going to succeed. I’ve worked my butt off to get to a place where I am able to run my own business and focus on creating full time. I’ve worked other part-time and full-time jobs along the way, with one goal in mind: Be my own boss; Create, Create, Create; and make art for everyone to enjoy. It’s so fulfilling to be able to bring joy and peace to others through art.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Heck no, the road has not been smooth! As an artist, if you are going to succeed you must learn to take nothing personally. If someone doesn’t like your art or designs, you’ve got to suck it up. My mentor in college taught me that you will hear “no” more than you will hear “yes”. I’ve been working on maintaining and strengthening my thick skin for years. It can be difficult when you have failure after failure with your art, like not landing a client, having a client change their mind right before they sign a contract, or worse disliking the final product of a commission. These things do happen and so far they have occurred more times than I care to mention. But that’s the thing with success; you have to keep going and maintain your perseverance. I’ve had trouble paying bills, rent, and even affording milk for cereal. (Yes, there was a time I used water in my cereal because I was so broke.) I have felt like I am not talented enough, creative enough, and just not good enough all around. BUT I keep on keeping on and continue to keep my hustle game strong. I’m still struggling to get my business to grow in the Houston area. I’m determined to succeed as an artist and entrepreneur. My super power is my resilience.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I specialize in murals and dabble in faux finishes. I am proud of my customer service and client satisfaction. I love what I do! I love helping others bring their artistic vision to life and I’m extremely proud of that! My ability to connect with clients on a personal and emotional level is unique. Because I take time to really understand what the client wants to convey in a commercial space or what type of mood they want in their home, I am able to make the art personal and meaningful, even in a bathroom! The women’s restroom I designed and painted at Weathered Souls Brewing Co. in San Antonio was full of positive, encouraging, and empowering quotes, as well as floral designs. That bathroom was named as one of the best restrooms in San Antonio in 2017.
What were you like growing up?
I’ve always been described as weird. Probably, because I’m not afraid to do my own thing. I’m not scared to be a goof, to have others know that I’ve made mistakes, or to forge my own path. I guess my brain also operates differently, which is great for creating! Although I am an introvert who loves spending time alone, working alone, and doing activities alone, I can easily be outgoing. I always excelled academically, as well as in sports and art. In high school, I graduated number 10 in my class and was awarded a collegiate academic scholarship. Receiving my Bachelor of Fine Arts was not my initial goal in college. I didn’t think it was a logical career path. It wasn’t until I decided to go back to college when I was 24, that I finally decided to follow my passion.
