Today we’d like to introduce you to Corey Broady.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Corey. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always had a love for fashion as a kid but never put any thought into making my own until around 2015. In the summer of 2016, I released my first collection of shirts and everything was embroidered or screen printed because I didn’t know how to sew at the time. I had ideas but my skills could not keep up with what was in my head. I bought a sewing a machine right after and have been teaching myself ever since. Each collection I’ve released has represented a time period in my life. Whether it’s good or bad, I want to tell my truth; not ride a trend or anything. My goal is to express my past, present, and future through my work.
Has it been a smooth road?
Hell, no. My biggest obstacle is myself. I put a lot of pressure on my shoulders. There’s a lot of doubt from family which is expected when you’re not “succeeding” by other people’s standards. Early on, there was a lot of self-doubts, but the better I got at sewing, I grew more confident.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I operate this whole thing out of my room. I cut and sew everything, I take all the pictures for the clothes, and had to learn how to photoshop here and there. What sets me apart from other designers is everything. There’s only a couple of cut and sew designers that have my respect and they know who they are.
My most recent collection “back from the dead.” The way everything came together at the last second was magic. And the events that inspired this collection could’ve altered my life to where I’m not able to answer these questions right now, but I was able to pour that into my craft and I’m here now. Free.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the city for having its own culture. Everywhere I’ve been Houston has the respect it’s been due for sometime now. But I do hate how separated or divided the city can be.
